XPS 14z backlit keyboard settings

I just received my XPS 14z, and I am wondering how to change the bootup process that lights up my keyboard.  having to turn the keyboard light off every time I turn the computer on is getting to be annoying.....

c595970,

You can try...

Start, control panel, Windows mobility center, click on the little box next to the backlit keyboard on. You should see these settings.

Usually the computer should remember the last settings for the backlit keyboard.

Thanks PudgyOne.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work.  Any other ideas .. perhaps a setting in the boot menu?

Thanks

c595970,

It's supposed to keep the settings. My old Dell Studio 1737 used to work correctly. It would remember the settings that were last used on battery and on the AC Adapter.

I currently have a Dell XPS L501x and the setting do not remember. Try going to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag number and download and install Dell QuickSet and try the settings again. If it doesn't work, let me know.

I have a test to try.   Go into msconfig, click start, search and type msconfig and click on msconfig.  Once msconfig is open, click the services tab, then check "hide all Microsoft services", click disable all, click the startup tab and click disable all, click ok and allow the system to be rebooted.

Then go into Windows Mobility settings (windows key and X), keyboard lighting and choose five seconds to turn off keyboard lighting.  Then check if the keyboard lighting turns off.

While in Mobility Center turn keyboard lighting off all together and reboot the system while everything is still disabled in msconfig and see if Windows Mobility keeps your settings.

I want to find out if there is some software that is interfering with quickset, if you find that there is no keyboard lighting settings after killing everything in msconfig, return to msconfig and look for quickset and make sure that it is checked.  If the system starts keeping keyboard lighting settings with everything killed in msconfig then we know that there is a conflict with other software in the notebook.

After testing return to msconfig and chose "normal startup" and click ok and allow the system to be rebooted.  Please report back here with the results.

Thanks

TB

Hi Terry.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, even after killing everything, it did not save.

However, and maybe this may help you, it did save the 5 seconds (where it was previously saved for 2 second).  It just won't save the "off" setting.

Thanks

If you have uninstalled / reinstalled Quickset and you still have the problem with Msconfig, then this will either be a problem with the way that Quickset was coded, or Windows is corrupted.  Does the problem bother you enough to want to reimage the drive.  Very few people have reported this problem so I can't say it is an inherent problem with Quickset.

Terry,

I'm having a similar problem.  The settings for the backlit keyboard don't show up in the mobility center.  I remember it did when I first received the computer (about a week ago) but not anymore.  Do you know what I can do to get it back? There are a couple other settings too but I don't remember what they were.

Thanks

cgr009,

Go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag number. Select your operating system, then under applications, download and install Dell Quickset. After you double click on it and install, you should then have the backlit settings in the Windows Mobility Center.

pudgyone, Dell quickset isn't an option under applications. The only option is 'dell digital'. Is there another way to install it? Thanks for your help.

cgr009,

Are you sure you have a backlit keyboard?

Go to Dell Warranty Status enter your service tag number, click on original configuration. It will be listed if you have a backlit keyboard.

cgr009,

What happens when you press the F6 button?

You can uninstall Dell Quickset, then restart your computer.

Install the version you downloaded.

What happens?

Does you laptop have a media strip? if you click on the gears, what do you see? Make sure the function roow key is set on multimedia.

Does it work now?
