xps 15z screen issues

Question

I just got my new xps 15z and I have a problem with the screen. I can see faint vertical lines across the entire screen. It's making all images fuzzy and text difficult for me to read.

Is this normal for the 15z or do i have a problem. I haven't seen this issue with my other dell notebooks (a xps m1330 and an old inspiron 9400).

Does anyone else have this problem? Some people say its normal, if it is im returning it as no other notebooks i've seen have this, including MUCH cheaper ones.

This is now getting worse. The glue that holds the plastic bezel is coming off and i've only used it for for a total of 30mins!

The chrome trim is loose also. Can any advise if i should bother even having this fixed? Im not so bothered the trim but the screen lines are making it very distracting.

If i can't get at least the screen fixed, i'm returning it and getting a macbook.

From another new Dell XPS 15z owner.

The XPS15z screen sucks.

My current Dell notebooks Studio 1555 FHD 1080p and Dell Studio 1737 RGBLED 1080p are way crisper and sharper than the XPS 15z.

The blacks are not as black on the 15z. Blacks are way more greyish and fuzzy.

Reading black text on the XPS 15z sucks. Fuzzy, greyish, and lots of eye strain. Surfing the web is painful after awhile.

I tried adjusting the Cleartype, but it doesnt help. Cleartype at default settings on my Studio 1555 and Studio 1737 are perfect.

I tried adjusting color settings, but that didn't help either.

The 15z screen in general is more fuzzy and less crisp than my older Studio 1555.

Colors and contrast are generally better with the XPS 15z.

I bought a Dell XPS 15z to replace the Studio 1555, but I think I'm keeping my Studio 1555 and returning the XPS 15z.

I just got my  xps 15z today too, and I have almost exactly the same problem: faint vertical lines, flat and fuzzy pictures, and when I click I sometimes get small, blue horizontal lines across my screen. I'm strongly considering returning mine.

I guess I'm lucky... I just got mine, and the screen is crisp and clear with no lines, faint or otherwise.

You should try and get a replacement if they shipped you a defective unit, which it clearly sounds like they did.

I have heard others reporting those lines, I don't notice them. I have to move my face up very close to the screen to see any sort of lines. It might be worth trying a new screen.

In terms of the trim, I've had mine replaced already. It's a little disappointing for a premium priced laptop to be made with flimsy plastic trim.

I have exactly the same problem. I waited aged for this machine and it is a lemon. I have a feeling they are all lemons and only some people can see the lines. Cheers

I just got my 15z in India, and I can confirm the same problem . The vertical lines are quite prominent and can be seen , on white / brown background.

Sad for a premium product. Anyone without these issues, or is it common on all screens? This should not happen for such a high PPI screen!

I think there are 2 manufacturers for the screen.  LG Philips and Samsung.   My 1st 15z had a perfect screen.  Bright, white and crisp.  My 2nd 15z had the vertical lines and wasn't a bright.  I had the 2nd 15z screen replaced under warranty, but the replacement screen was just as crappy.  Its a crap shoot on whether you get a 15z with a good screen or not.

@zbear . The usual screen is the AU Optronics b156hw3 ( auo.com ) The device manager tag says [AUO30ED] for all panels. I don't know if there are more panel manufacturers, but it would explain why some panels are Grainy/have a mesh pattern/exhibit screen door effect !

. @Anandtech and others have mentioned that the default panel they reviewed was the 15.6" WLED Glossy 16:9 1080p (1920x1080) (AU Optronics B156HW3) . Were you able to find the panel number , or was the entire screen unit + casing replaced ?

Dell replaced the whole LCD/bezel assembly so it was impossible to check the LCD manufacturer.

But it is the same panel you are describing as "Grainy/have a mesh pattern/exhibit screen door effect".

The Dell 15z LCD is duller, grainier, and not as bright. The Dell 1737 LCD is bright, crisp, and vibrant.
