XPS L502X Memory?
Hi,
Belarc tells me my laptop has a two slot memory with one slot empty. The full slot is carrying 4GB Ram, so potentially there is 8GB available. However, Crucial.com tells me that the max memory for this laptop is 16GB and indeed they are advertising a 16GB kit (8GBx2) for the XPS. So my question is - how much memory can my XPS take please?
Thanks.

Before getting into an answer here, I'm going to question the need for more than 8GB of ram ? :emotion-18:
Even if you get to run more than 8 gb of ram, it wont be of any use and wont add speed wings to the laptop. You wont ever feel the difference.
Also the maximum amount of memory supported by a Processor is different from the amount the Motherboard can handle. So if dell says that 8 GB is max, so 8 GB is max, not more than that as the motherboard wont support memory greater than it. So its a NO-GO for more than 8 GB.
Hope I answered your question. :emotion-11:

2X8 is max. 16G total. Usually 4G ships as 2X2 - you should physically check the system.

Thanks, would the XPS L502X register 16G or would it only 'see' 8G - cannot understand why PC World says this is an 8G laptop whilst Crucial say it is a 16?
It's a Dual Core i5 by the way, not a i7 or Quad Core.

I have 4GB Ram at the moment. Let's consider this to be a single 4GB module, what would happen if I plugged an 8GB memory module in the vacant slot please?
btw, it says here that 4GB modules are the max for single XPS slots

Thanks, but negative: that post references a XPS 15 (L502x) with i7-2860QM
However, I am running a XPS L502x i5 as opposed to the later(?) i7.
Please advise further.

If a subsequent bios upgrade allowed more Ram for this model can that please be confirmed by a Dell technician, with details?
Thanks.

Thanks razr7, that's what I suspected all along - now I can upgrade to 8GB and forget about the phantom 16GB module!
