XPS M1330 - Screen Problems / nvlddmkm
Problem:
The screen will randomly screw(for lack of a better word) up. I haven't gamed in a long time, but randomly, eg. i'll just be using internet explorer + msn messenger, my screen will go hay wire. Only way i can describe it is, colours are flaring everywhere, you can't see anything, and the only way to get out of it is to hold power down for 5 seconds.
But even when i do that, and restart the pc, Windows will fail to load. So turn it off and do it again until it does load. And then even at the log in screen, it can screw up there and colours and screen all messed up until it freezes.
Sometimes when the screen goes crazy, i'll get the message in a bubble " display drive nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered". But this only occurs when i'm lucky, most times the laptop will just freeze.. and i'll have to reboot.
I've also received blue screens but its all jumbled and blurred .. but can definately see the word malfunction.
Solutions Tried:
* Tried upgrading graphics driver to latest : still nothing changed
* Microsoft fix KB940105 ( tried installing, but says the update isn't for my system)
_____
So what can i do about this? I really need to get this fixed, it's terribly shocking when it happens and i can't work on anything .. surprisingly it hasn't happened as i wrote this thread.
I'm up for all input. Thanks
My current notebook:
XPS M1330
dual 2.4gh
2gb gam
nvidia geforce 8400M GS
upgraded slim screen
Vista Business 32bit
Service Pack 1

Is the laptop still under warranty, because the problem is almost certainly something to do with your graphics card?
The first thing I'd suggest you do is run the diagnostics test (F12 on startup).
Next, phone Dell tech support, and explain the problem to them (let them know the result of the diagnostics test).
It may require a replacement (assuming it is the graphics card)?

Yeah still under warranty, i'm just trying to see what i can do before making any calls to dell.
I tried the diagnostic test, everything graphics wise was a pass .. went through all that yes/no stuff .. everything seemed fine. I'll post some videos of my screen and what happens when i try log in.
Are there any other ideas out there? I've searched many other forums, still havent' found a solution to my problem.

I am having the same problem. I called Dell and they tried different things, like new driver and upgrading the Bios. It did not help. I was told to connect the laptop to an external monitor the next time it happens. I did this and I saw the same results on the monitor as I seen on the laptop. This told me that it was the video card.
I called Dell last week, after it happened several more times. This time I talked to a supervisor and they are going to replace the mother board. New board is with the technician and will be contacting me today. (I hope.)
I hope this will help you.

Yo sparky, tell me if your laptop goes well yeah. I still don't know what the problem is.
Here's a video of what happens when i tried to turn my laptop on .. this happened several times before it started to work. There's nothing I can do when this happens.

What would be the best way to get the forum admin's attention ?

Yep, having the exact same problems here but now it won't start at all - well, it may be starting but it's a bit hard to tell through the multi-coloured pinstripes.
Will be contacting support as soon as they are open.

Yeah, i don't think there's a way you can fix this yourself. I called dell and within 3-4 days, a technician came over and replaced my motherboard. I also couldn't turn on my laptop too. But yeah, they came and replaced my motherboard and my laptop worked again.

Sorry it took so long to get back. To make a long story short, I also had the different colored stripes on my screen. Called Dell and they replaced the Mother Board and I have been using the laptop for over a week and have had no problems. Don't delay, because it will not get any better. Mine was getting worse. A lot of people talk about how bad Dell service is, but they fixed the problem fast, once I got there attention. I realize the problem should not have occurred in the first place, but that's the way it goes. Good Luck
