XPS m1710 Blu-Ray Problems

Ok I'm not really sure where to start.  I got my m1710 about 2 months ago.  I got it w/ the Blu-Ray drive and Vista 32bit.  It came w/ Casino Royale (which ran fine).  I have tried a few other movies that ran fine also.  Recently I rented the new Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer movie and Employee of the Month.  Neither of them work and when they start to play they are distored and green screened.  I have checked all around myself online and couldn't find an answer.  I updated all video and audio drivers and also updated PowerDVD DX which is what came w/ my laptop to play blu-ray.  I called dell and the tech support told me it was the drive.  So they sent me a replacement.  It did the same exact thing on the same movies.  So then I read that vista might be causing it.  Installed xp 64-bit but no drivers for this laptop even though i was told there were.  So then i re-installed vista 32bit and still the same prob on the same movies.  So then I started looking for a firmware upgrade for my blu-ray drive.  Aparently it does exist.  My firmware is 1.01  Sony offers a firmware upgrade up to 1.05.  Dell does not.  Does anyone know how to solve my problem because i got this extremely expensive peice of hardware to play blu-ray movies and if it is not going to play all of them it is no good to me.  Please someone help.  Thanks!

I have also been in touch with Dell and have been told this issue is a FW issue.  It sure would be nice for Dell to validate the 1.05 driver as Sony has.  In my view, this is a huge customer service issue if shipping BlueRay Disks do not play on dell drives.  Dell... can we please get a FW update !!!!

Dell needs to get it together on this firmware issue since with blue-ray they will be required for compatibility.
There have been other people reporting this type of issue so hopefully with enough complaints they will get it together and post the updates.

I've been lucky so far with my mats-hita uj-220 but it has FW 1.00

just curious

if thisFW issue is with pc drives what about home drives? Does the same thing happen???
Pretty lame for a movie to dictate what firm ware is need in order to view the movie....oh wait a min the that way the Big movie companies get you to buy new equipment with every movie release....

I add my complaint. All the money I spent on my XPS1710 and it will not play anything after and including Fantastic Four Return of the Silver Surfer.

I called Dell twice and they tell me...

1) They know nothing about the can not playing Blu-Ray issue.
2) Then they blame Cyberlink.

I really think it is a firmware issue with the Blu-ray drive.

They told me I should go to the manufacture and look for new firmware.

IT IS A DELL SHOULD THEY NOT SELL ME A WORKING PRODUCT !!!!!

Power DVD says it is a Mitustusi or something like that drive I do not know where to find firmware for it ?

Where can I find the latest driver and how would I install it?

I am glad you got the latest PowerDVD Ultra, I was very close to saying ok bite the bullet the OEM version does not work and spend $100 on the latest full retail version. So I know I do not need to waste my money.

I got Warranty I could call them up say it does not work give them a Blu-ray disk but I really do not want to live without my computer and I am sure they would say YOUR Blu-ray disk is defective with no research at all send it back unrepaired.

You are wasting your time calling Dell.

They will do NOTHING and know NOTHING.  It is THERE FAULT.

The problem we are all having is an issue with old firmware.  Well the drive we all have is made by panasonic.  Panasonic does no release firmware to the public.  They release it to the big companies such as Dell, Sony, etc.

Sony uses the same drive in there laptops.  They are on the ball and have already updated their firmware to 1.5, why us that have Dell laptops are stuck with 1.1 which won't play any new movie from Fantastic Four and after.  This is completely Dell's fault because they sell us a Blu-Ray drive in a "cool" looking laptop and then don't back up there product after we spend thousands of dollars on it. (well at least I did).  I swear this makes me want to just return this laptop and then go buy a cheaper one and buy a blu-ray player seperate.  It would actually be cheaper that way and at least IT WOULD WORK!

Dell...   Get on the ball...    All of us are fed up with you right now....

My ordeal...so far......2nd m1710.....first one had hard drive issues....and also the blue ray thing!!!! Dell was quite good about replacing the laptop.......still had the blue ray issue though....after countless hours on the phone....new software......from powerdvd7 to version 6.6.....no luck with that either.....more hours on the phone and new optic driver.......no luck with that either....(by no luck I am refering to the fact that the blue ray still doesn't work) some more hours on the phone and I get a credit to purchase powerdvdultra....again Dell was good about that......still no Blue ray. More hours on the phone and I am being shipped yet another optical drive....Dell is trying though....should I hope to see what I have paid for????? We can only hope........I have nothing better to do...yeah...right!!!

Well I am on this band wagon also. I have had my xps m1710 for about 4 months now. Intitially blurays that I tried (shooter, last samurai, ghost rider) worked fine. A few nights ago I hired out 4 blurays (casino royale, hostel 2, reign over me, ???) and none of them worked !! The best I got was casino royale which loaded up fine got the menu fine but playing the movie resulted in a green digital interference (best I can describe it). Reign over me did the same thing. Hostel 2 wouldn't even load up at all. I tried using some of the newer drivers off laptopstogo website but I came across two issues - when running off battery power the screen would get a vertical line distortion after about a minute or so. Secondly it wouldn't let me play any blurays....powerdvd dx would say the driver was incompatible. As a result I was forced to go and use the dell driver off their site (which I have to say is VERY OLD !!!) Seriously Dell, people here have paid serious $$$ for these gaming laptops and even more $$$ for bluray players and for the issue not to be addressed is poor support from a leading technology company. C'mon Dell we are your top shelf clients in your consumer pc market and we are not being looked after. Sony has come up with several firmware updates for the matchitsa/panasonic UJ-210 bluray drive so why haven't you ?? Clearly the newer bluray discs need firmware updates to better read the format. Lets get moving here before people start returning their high end laptops. Dell XPS M1710 Intel T7600 (2.33ghz) 4 gb RAM 7950 gtx Bluray player

Why is this "under investigation" when firmware updates are part of the blueray spec?
Dell is totally dropping the ball again on this issue.
They have always been bad about optical firmware but I thought that since this was a blueray it would be properly supported.

Weeds season 2 blueray menu's are messed up and you have to guess what you are clicking not to mention the rest of the issues already reported.

For as expensive an option as this is there is no excuse in the world for this shoddy support.

Blu-ray introduced a new copy protection scheme; one of the first movies released was Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer. So any older movies will likely be fine but anything newer you see the previews and when the main feature starts you are out of luck. It sounds like Dell is working on it hopefully they will release a firmware soon.

Fingers crossed !!! I forgot to add that I have also come across the inability to click on some menus (as previously stated on this thread) on some blurays....resulting in using the keyboard to navigate.
