XPS M2010 Slow

There are lots of varibles in this.

 

This biggest one will  be,  How many applications are running?  Vista takes up a very large amount of resources.  Goto your task manager look at the bottom of the page write down the number or processes running.  Then go into performance and see how much of your memory is being used.

 

If you want to knock down the number or programs that are running.  Goto Start -- "Search >> Msconfig" Then disable all of the startups.

Currently I have 67 processing running, the same as on my desktop optiplex 755, 2.4GHz. The desktop is vastly more responsive on the optiplex 755 than the M2010.

 

I shouldn't have to wait seconds for a folder on the start menu to expand after clicking upon it.

 

I have had Dell tech support look at the machine remotely but they couldn't figure things out and simply suggested that I had a Virus or Malware and to reimage the system.

 

The PC is brand new out of the box so if there are viruses on it, then it came preinstalled with them. Seriously, the M2010 was sluggish from the get go and having used other lesser specced laptops with windows Vista, I am rather disappointed with the M2010

 

I've also noticed that dragging windows around is somewhat jerky but this problem seems to disappear if I use a USB mouse rather than the blue tooth one that shipped with the machine. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

First My pwr sply is 150 Watt not 130 This may be part of the problem.

 

as to the speed issue the processor will only run as fast as the pwrsply will allow.

 

Have you had it pluged in while off to see if the battery charges?

 

Performance with Vista Takes RAM,  How much do you Have.?.

The 130W power supply came as standard with the PC but if I'd have known that the 150W variant was more of a necessity than an option, I would have added it to my order. When you power up the PC on the 130W supply the first thing you see is a BIOS level warning telling me that computer performance will be affected and the battery will take longer to charge unless I connect a 150W power supply.

 

Why on earth Dell doesn't ship the 150W supply as standard is anybody's guess.

 

I have had the laptop plugged in now for several days, powered down and the battery flatly refuses to charge. The battery came with a charge level of 31% and now after 5 days I'm down to 30%

 

Computer Specs are:

XPS-M2010 @ 2.33GHz

4GB Ram

Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit

 

Another sign of it's sluggish behavior, expanding folders in the start menu takes seconds (2-3). All very frustrating. I've even had suggestions from Dell support to install windows XP to see if that speeds things up!

 

 

I purchased my M2010 in nov. 07 and the Standard pwr sply was/is 150Watt.

 

If I configure one online is appears to come with a 150W PS  If I were you I would ask dell tech about the possibility of changing your 130W out for the 150W.

 

Possibly your battery is BAD. I think you said they were sending you a new one.

 

I can say this - It did take me a while to get Vista Ultimate running well as mine came with XP MCE 2005 which I still have installed. in vista I have 76 process running and it works fine.

 

I hope you get it all figured out.

 

If dell wants you to install XP to see if it speeds up Then THEY Should SUPPLY it to You FREE.

I AM Very Happy with My M2010.

i bought my in 11/07 and came with 150w power supply and is still very fast with windows vista ultimate and just 2gb of ram, windows score is 4.9 on processor and ram, graphics-5.9, gaming graphics 5.6, primary hard disk-5.7(raid 0). I tried one time to connect a smaller power supply from my older dell laptop inspiron 90w to see if i can use for traveling and it did give a warning as well and didn't charge the battery and was to slow to.

what's the windows score in yours?

Your power supply is DEFINITELY the cause of your problem.  If you use any power supply than a 150W, your M2010 will operate, but the battery will not charge, and your CPU runs at 1/2 speed (plus, you get that nagging warning message at boot up).

 

I think your order erroneously shipped with the wrong power supply.  Is Dell sending you a battery or a power supply?  Hopefully, a power supply.

 

The 150W is standard, not an option, and should have been what was sent to you with the M2010.

I'm surprised (OK, maybe not), that XPS support would say that the 130W supply is correct.

 

They should know better than that.

This is exactly what I am experiencing.

 

When I first contacted Dell tech support regarding these issues they told me that the 130W power supply isn't the issue but obviously it is. In fact they orginally shipped  out a replacement battery because they thought that was faulty.

 

Anyway the good news is Dell have arranged to have the 150W power supply to be shipped out to me.
