XPS M2010 won't eject CD
I have a Dell XPS M2010 loaded with Microsoft Windows Vista. Recently, the DVD drive (TEAC DVW28SLZ) stopped working properly such that it no longer responds to the Eject button on the top of the machine, the Eject menu option within Windows or anything else. When requested to do so, the drive lifts to open but the CD is not actually ejected. Unfortunately, this now means that I have a disc stuck in the drive. :(
I have tried switching the machine off and on again (several times), reloading drivers etc. nothing seems to work. The same problem occurred about four or five months ago but then cured itself overnight. This time, however, it seems terminal.
Does anybody know what might causing this problem or how to fix it? I'm reluctant to call Dell straight away as I'm out of warranty and don't fancy the prospect of a large repair bill but that may prove to be the only option.

Do you use the Vista sidebar?
There's a handy 'Open/Cose CD/DVD Tray' gadget available for it here.
If that doesn't work... you may have to replace the drive yourself.
Replacement drives aren't particularly expensive (<£40), and you can watch a video on how to do it here (video 9/the last one).
Although he's working on a XPS M1730... the process is exactly the same for any model, obviously :smileywink:

No, I don't generally use the Vista sidebar but I can always make an exception! :) I will give this a go this evening. I am beginning to think, however, that I will have to replace the unit as you suggest. I found some instructions on Dell's website about how to do it and I will take a look at the video you've found too. The only thing is that I haven't found anywhere which sells the same model of drive - do you know if it's even still available? It doesn't appear to be listed on TEAC's website either.

There is also the possability of installing a Blu-Ray drive.

Thanks for the link - the price seems a bit steep but I'll bear it in mind.
An update for anybody who's interested: I called Dell technical support last night and they confirmed that it sounds like the drive has gone. I was told that an on-site engineer would call me back today to quote me on fitting a replacement but, surprise, surprise, nobody did. I tried to call the parts line this evening (all I really want is a quote for a replacement unit - I can fit it myself) but, despite Dell's website claiming that they are open until 9pm, they are not. Oh, and the quoted phone number didn't work either.
I'm still quite pleased with the machine despite the current problems but I have to say that Dell's customer service is really shoddy.

The Dvd is a slimline Slot loader it is a standard form factor the Apple Mac slot Loaders will fit and as to working I see no reason they wouldn't.
