XPS17 USB 3.0 issues
I have a brand new XPS 17, I bought an external harddrive from Seagate, portable Expansion drive.
Everything works fine, but when I try to do a backup that takes a long time, windows stops recognizing the device, reconnectiong the device does not make it re-appear I have to reboot to have it show up in Windows again.
I have changed the power option for the USB devices, but this did not help.
I have been reading that some people experienced problems using USB 3.0 devices on XPS laptops, could this be the same ?
Is there a solution for this ?

Hi,
Welcome to the Community
Surely we can assist you.
You need to go to www.support.dell.com
Then Drivers and download http://tinyurl.com/c3o8g5s
Enter your service tag and upload the chipset drivers and update Bios when you are doing that make sure the system battery is more than 10% charged and the Ac adapter is connected with the system .
Thanks
Varun

I have the latest BIOS A17 and I have installed the USB3_Renesas_W7_A03_Setup-61X2W_ZPE.exe (7MB) for my system.
But the problem remains the same !

I went back to the store where I bought the external drive and got another brand of drive but I have the same problem with that drive too, speed is not USB 3.0 speed and the system stops recognizing the drive after a while.
Called Dell this morning and they suggested testing the drive on USB 2 port, which I am doing now, but even if this works it is very disapointing that I have a system with USB 3 ports which I cannot use !

It seems this is a common problem with XPS 15 & 17 systems : en.community.dell.com/.../19353745.aspx
