1905fp USB Ports

Anyone know why my PC won't boot up when I have anything plugged into the USB ports on the side of my monitor? Everything works fine if I plug them in while the PC is up, but if I reboot it locks.

What kind of 'anything' are we talking about? I've seen reports of people having problems when they plug in things that really belong back on the main USB ports on the computer, things like a mouse. If you are talking about innocuous things like a camera, then you may have a problem with the monitor.

If it requires a powered hub, then it may not be something you should hook up to the monitor's USB ports. May be best to call support and ask, unless someone here is using their IPod with monitor ports and has no problem booting with it plugged in?

It's probably trying to boot off of the USB device.  Check your boot order in the BIOS and move USB devices to the end.

I have the 1905FP monitor at work. I have used the side USB ports for my flash drive. It has worked perfectly at work forever. Because of this, I bought a 1905FP for home. When I put the flash drive in the side USB ports, I initially get great results. After 1 to 20 minutes or so (the time is inconsistent), the flash drive goes on and off repeatedly. I have spent over 15 hours on the telephone with Dell’s tech support, late for work several times. I replaced the USB cable from the tower of my Dell desktop computer to the monitor. I actually borrowed the one from work just to test. I’ve tried different flash drives with the same result. I tried an external hard drive, with the same result. I have also replaced the monitor. I need to ship it back to Dell quickly. I’m wondering what I need to do to make the USB ports work consistently. Other than this issue, the monitor performs satisfactorily. The devices work perfectly when plugged into the usb ports on my tower. Any help, suggestions, or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you've already gone thru alot of combinations of things to try. The other other thing I might suggest would be to hook the monitor up to a different computer and see if it still exhibits the same symptoms there. Perhaps just lug it into work one day and give it a shot if you don't have another one handy.

Load the official monitor drivers? No, can't imagine that would make any difference, they primariliy just list the resolution and refresh rates supported by the monitor. Neither would loading the current drivers for your video card help with the USB issue, and as you said, if it ain't broke...

Thanks for the quick reply; I'll give that a try. One of the Dell reps concluded that it must be an operating system problem, and she suggested that I format my hard drive and reinstall all of the software. I would only do that as a last resort. Do you think that loading the official drivers will help? I am currently satisfied with the performance, other than the USB issue. I’d hate to fix what is not broken.

Thanks
