2 issues - P990 & W1700

Question

Two things... I got a 8100 with a 21' Trinitron P990 in the late summer of 2001 and I began experiencing problems with it around last christmas. It was time for an upgrade so my wife and I purchased a new dell pc, and a Dell 17' LCD TV with it since the old monitor was having problems. This was before I did much research on monitors. The problem I'm having with the P990 is when I turn it on, it has lines across it for one, and it will stay on for 2 minutes or so if I don't move the mouse, press a key, or do anything using the computer, if I try to click on start for example, it shuts off (and the green light turns orange) immediately, even if it's only been on 10 seconds. What is the problem? And what can I do to fix it? What are my options? I'm an avid online gamer, and I'm experiencing tearing and smearing in my gaming when I use the LCD TV, even though I was assured the lcd tv was 'great for gaming' when I inquired about purchasing it over the phone. Is there an exchange / return program or anything I can do since I am extremely unhappy with the performance of this new monitor? Thanks in advance.

Here are some things to try and resolve your issue with the p990 monitor. For the LCD TV issue try posting the problem in the LCD TV forum.

Perform monitor reset
Perform monitor self test feature check
Check for bent or broken pins

ALso, to the best of my knowledge, the monitor cable isn't detachable in the back of the monitor is it? Is it possible to get this replaced? I've been suspecting that this may be the problem.

Magickk, Only the video cable is detachable and not the power cable. It goes into the back of the monitor.
