2005FPW stops displaying after a power cycle

I just got my 2005FPW yesterday and I'm experiencing a very odd problem. Whenever I turn the power off to the monitor (and then come back later and turn it back on) the backlight comes on, but there is no display. None of the front buttons do anything except for the power button. There is no message about the input signal, just a blank backlit screen. If I unplug the DVI cable (so the monitor goes into self-test mode) and then plug it back it, it instantly displays. Note this problem only happens at 1680x1050, and only when I power cycle the monitor. Below is information on my setup:

Dell 2005FPW rev. A01
ASUS V9750 w/256MB video ram (NVidia GeForce 5700 chip)
- Dual Outputs, 1 DVI-I and 1 RGB
- Running NVidia Driver v66.93

I have not checked to see if it behaves the same way with the RGB interface. I will be trying that this evening. But, even if it doesn't, I'd still prefer to be using the DVI interface.

Has anyone ever seen this or have any ideas what the trouble could be?

horshack00,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Take a look at the online documentation for this monitor. It may help you to understand this monitors and its controls. Click the link below.

Jesse,

There are no problems with the controls when the monitor is displaying correctly. I am using the DVI-D connection. I have the resolution set to 1680x1050 at 60Hz.

Once I turn off the monitor, and then turn it back on, the backlight turns on and that's it. No picture is displayed. The monitor doesn't say "Cannot display this mode" nore does it run a self test. It just sits there blank. I cannot access any of the menus from the front panel buttons either. The only thing that fixes this problem is unplugging the DVI cable and reconnecting it. At which point the display returns instantly.

If this isn't something common or known, I suppose I should call support to have a replacement shipped out?

horshack00,

If none of the buttons are working then, email support@dell.com and have the monitor replaced.

This could be that infamous "cannot wake up after sleep" problems with this monitor. I think there's been a lot of discussion about this in the forums here and at Hardforums.com, so be sure to read about it to see if getting a replacement will really do you any good. (Reason I say that is because you already have an A01 monitor which is the latest revision)

Support has notified me that a replacement is on the way, but the current display started working last night. I came home from a concert and pressed the power button, and it just came on. Now over the past couple of days, I've had to unplug and plug in the DVI cable multiple times to get a picture to come up.

Could it be possible that the DVI cable itself is to blame instead of the flat panel? I guess I'll know for sure once the replacement comes.

So I came home today with the replacement flat panel. Went to turn on the old one so I could shut my computer down, and there was garbage on the screen. Powercycling the flat panel brought it back to life, so obviously, the problem hadn't fixed itself.

I just put on the replacement flat panel and it's behaving perfectly (and promptly).

Thanks for all your help guys.

i'm having the same problem with a 2005fpw i moved to a different machine.  if i change to a non-native, lesser resolution, this problem is fixed (but then of course i have to look at stretched words, etc.).  because the monitor worked fine on a different system with a different video card, i believe it's not a problem with the monitor.  i've downloaded the dell 2005fpw driver and installed it and that still doesn't fix the problem.

philbock,

A replacement monitor from Dell fixed my troubles. It seemed that there was likely just an issue with the Digital DVI interface in the monitor itself. My replacement has been working perfectly for a while now.
