2007 WFP (A02) Flickering!

Hi,

I bought a 2007WFP monitor recently and I really like it, BUT it "flickers", just like a CRT on 60Hz refresh rate. I decided to make this a seperate posting, since the problem has been mentioned before please move my thread if you feel this is inappropriate.


The flickering is only visible in some specific (midtone) areas, e.g. 50% gray, and very bright or dark areas are generally not affected if my eyes can be trusted.

I'm using the monitor with an Ibook G4 800Mhz (32MB Radeon 9200) via the VGA adapter, and at first I thought the flickering could be caused by the bad/weak signal quality - although a friend's Dell 21" TFT worked fine some months ago, so I defibrilated my old PC (AMD 1700+, Win2k SP4, 512MB RAM) again to see if this could indeed be the cause of the problem.

I tried a Radeon 8500 128MB (VGA and DVI), a Matrox G550 (VGA and DVI) and the internal Geforce 4 MX (VGA), but the flickering is still there, even with the PC.

The monitor is calibrated with a Gretag EyeOne since I'm using it for graphic design, but it doesn't matter which profile I use, flickering is still the same.

I'll call support again on monday to see if they know anything, but do you have any input on this?!

And since we're talking about the 2007WFP, some minor observations:

The Bad:
- I had to return the first one since it ran so hot I could barely touch the top area.
- Both my current (A02 made in China) and the faulty one (A02 made in the Czech Republic) have the flickering.
- Both still suffer from VERY faint gradient banding, even when properly calibrated.
- The gamut is good overall, but the blacks are clipped quite severely (for a TFT), and very noticeably so compared to a 23" Apple Cinema Display.
- The "contrast" setting is not available" via DVI, which is quite annoying if you plan on calibrating the monitor.

The good:
- No discolorations, casts, darkening etc. whatsoever, VERY homogenic display, I hope it stays that way (unlike the Apple Cinema Displays)

You must be using the VGA to see Auto Adjust.

The strange thing with this monitors is that there are not two alike. I had two supposedly identical monitors for some time (I had the old one for about a week before Dell gave me a new unit). After resetting both to factory settings and connecting them through DVI to the same computer with the same settings, the colors (white, for example) were different in both displays and the flicker was more severe in the old monitor than in the new one.

All,

If your using VGA, you can try to autadjust it and then fine tune the OSD- Display Settings- Phase setting. It will not remove all of the flicker. I went to the website using both VGA and DVI. The flicker shows up. It is the coding of the grey backdrop causing the flicker. It is not our monitors.

I am using DVI so that wouldn't fix the slight flickering my monitor has. My previous Dell 2007WFP monitor had a lot more flickering. In my case, exchanging it alleviated the problem although it is not completely gone.

So I guess there really isn't a fix. The only other thing I see flickering is when windows vista has an interruption cause you installed something, and the screen dims to a black hue and gets a pop up. The black will flicker slightly. What's funny is that it flickers mostly on the right 2/3rds of the monitor. The left side is solid and unaffected.
 
I would be nice to hear what Dell has to say about this. I'm still happy with the monitor for the price, and we have a 3 year warranty so I'm not worried. If the problem ever worsens I'd call them up. But I am dissapointed that I though I was getting a "high-end" UltraSharp monitor, and it has "flaws"...

Well, that did absolutely nothing! No surprises there. It flickered in VGA mode. As soon as I plugged it it "auto-adjusted". Just to make sure I did it again and both times flickers. I went and tried medding with the other settings that aren't normally available through DVI to see if I could improve it, but no luck.
 
I guess we just have to stick with the flicker. :(

The weird part is that only part of the screen flickers. I'd say only about two thirds does, and mostly on the right side. It also flickers with other solid colours and when Vista dims the screen to issue a "warning" I get similar results.
 
It's hard for me to judge, since this is my first LCD, but I thought the UltraSharp line were a high end LCD with a good panel that wouldn't Flicker...

I disagree - it's definitely the monitor.

We got two of these in our office a couple of weeks ago, and neither of us has been able to get it to go away for an extended period of time. If I adjust the color settings (turn down brightness, turn up contrast, etc.), sometimes I can make the flickering go away temporarily. But it always comes back. Changing the phase fixed nothing.

A good wallpaper to set on the monitor to see the flickering well is the right-side wallpaper here:

Well, my replacement arrived today and it seems fine. The old one was an A04, and this one is an A03, but I haven't seen it flicker yet. Fingers crossed...

I just got a 2007 WFP A04 yesterday and it makes my eyes hurt. I also receive the flicker on the web page but it seems there is some sort of bad quality in the monitor during any display, like a low Hz CRT that is making my eyes hurt with this monitor. I will send it back and see if the new one is any better. This is terrible, I was really hoping to enjoy this monitor.

Hello All,
  I was just reading all of this and I must say I just got a dell 2007WFP and it started flickering after Vista was installed... I sent it back; they replaced the monitor with another one... in the meantime I traded the Flickering monitor out for a plain 2007FP from my other dell on XP... whilst waiting for the new one... The 2007FP never flickered with a DVI connection to Vista... AND get this; the flickering 2007WFP never flickered on XP... Then I got the NEW 2007WFP hooked it up to the Vista machine and it well...FLICKERED while in photoshop CS2 (sounds like a driver problem)... granted it has not flickered with any other application at this time that I can tell (will keep you posted).
 
Dell claims this problem is not thier monitor well maybe not the hardware but it sure is the driver..IMHO.... the 2007FP should have flickered as well on vista but.... it didnt (different driver)...  Dell if your up for a trade Ill swap ya the BRAND NEW 2007WFP you just sent for a 2007FP, OR get on resolving them drivers for vista and get me a patch for the 2007WFP for CS2 on Vista without the Flickering. How about it dell, lets work this one out??

Hello there, I'm affraid that I must report another "flickering" history:

I've replaced my 2007wfp A02 after a year and half of perfect use. The exchange unit (A04) arrived fine, but while using it I detected a faint flickering of the backlight, visible on white or light tones. I first thought of my eyes, but finally I was forced to conclude that the unit has something different than my previous one.

The monitor was attached to the exactly same computer, using the same configuration and the same DVI output, so the problem must be related to an electric issue or poor backlight control. I was using the display attached to a 220v to 110v conversor, so I first get rid of that, and then raised the brightness from 25% (my usual) to 30% (since the bright is controlled modulating the "pulse" of the backlight).

I'm trying to NOT seek for the effect, just sit there and wait it to be noticed, and so far all seems fine.
