2405 "Image Settings" Question

Hello:

Just got this monitor and all goes well.

Except I can't figure why, when in the OSD, and the "Image Settings" section that I cannot change any of the options.

I am using the DVI cable and have an ATI 128 card (came with the Dell XPS.)

???

If not, what is the point or purpose of DVI??<<<

Sorry.  Just did a search and I see "a lot" of stuff on the subject.

I'm just not sure I like all these DVI "auto adjusted" features, vs. having a bit of control.

I have the GreatMacbeth EyeOne2 monitor calibrator, and am having a go at it now.

The color looks pretty good, but I'm getting consistently dark prints (not horribly dark, but say a few points darker.)

I have the monitor brightness turned _all the way_ down, and with DVI you can't adjust the contrast.

I may need some tech support from the calibrator folks on this, I guess.

DVI is the reason.  Change the cable to Analog, and you will be able to make some changes.   Check out the User Guide, and it tells you that DVI blocks out some that can be changed with analog

Yes, but....

Do I lose any image quality by using analog vs. DVI?

If not, what is the point or purpose of DVI??

Thanks,

Many of the newer monitors over the older ones have improved using analog, as mentioned on some tech sites and from some of the forum members.  Give analog a try and see if you can tell the difference.  Don't know myself why this is, and I believe it is LCD monitor standard, not just Dell.  Could be wrong on this.

you have a fairly modern video card installed right?

as you found out, DVI doesn't allow for contrast adjustments via the monitor controls, but, this is where you get to use that new software that came with the video card you needed to get the resolution of the 2405.

you can access by, right click the desktop, PROPERTIES, click on SETTINGS, then click on ADVANCED, then click on the name of the software that should be there. in that window you should see a host of settings that will allow you to fine tune.

i have an ATI card and the software is Catalyst, it allows me to set color, gamma, contrast, brightness and a host of other settings.

this week i will be calibrating my 2405 with the Monaco system and that should set everything just fine. here is also a link that may give you some more hidden secrets to adjusting LCD's.

Thanks.

Let's keep this going (by private email if no one else is interested.)

I also have an ATI card, but it's the one that came with my XPS.  A 9800/128 card. Do you think I should upgrade the card?

I turned my "brigthtness" all the way down as my prints were coming up dark, and I figured this would force me to lighten up on levels and curves.

I'll have to re-read the drycreek photo site, but I did glance at it.

I don't want to end up "double-profiling" or mucking up the waters here.  There are other controls that DVI does automatically.  Does it make any sense to go back to analog just to have control?

BTW, I"m calibrating with a GreatMacBeth EyeOne2 and current software.

Let me know what you think and how it goes...

A 9800/128 card is not adequate for 1920x1200. I upgraded from an ATI 9600 AIW 128MB to an ATI X850 Pro 256MB. I must say I'm happier. Also, check my post about my ATI setting that give me the best image quality for me (Your mileage may vary, of course).

What does "not adequate" mean?  It seems to work.

What will I gain?  Other than some speed in games?

Before I invest any money.

Not adequate means, when you play games for example, pumping up the resolutions, all the way to the monitors native, will slow the game down because that 9800 card is not the better one to have.  It will still work, but you will have to lower the game resolutions down somewhat in order to have the game more playable. The higher the game settings, including using that very nice monitor, requires a much better video card to crank up all the eye candy.

You should be able to get a nice display with the colorimeter, DVI or not.

I don't understand what the comment about the "dark prints" refers to.

hey Bubba, you get this sorted out?

i finally took the time to calibrate my 2405 with the Monaco opti XR and what a difference.

i am using a GeForce 7800GS AGP video card and after taking the time to carefully adjust the color sliders and brightness control, all i had to do was add just a touch of contrast in the nVidia control panel and "POP" this screen just literally came alive.
