2408WFP, E198WFP, Soundbar compatibility?
Hi,
I have two 11 year old Dell monitors – a 2408WFPb and a E198WFP. I would like to use a Dell Soundbar with one or both. The different models of Soundbar are confusing in terms of compatibility and I would appreciate some advice. Both seem to have the standard soundbar attachment slots at the bottom.
Am I correct that the AX510 is suitable for the 2408WFP and the AX510PA is for the E198WFP? Is the only difference a (separate?) power supply for the latter?
I have also read somewhere that the AS501 has better sound quality than the AX510. I that correct and would this model be compatible with either or both of my monitors? Although it would presumably need a separate power supply for the E198WFP?
Presumably I would also require a connecting cable with 3.5mm plugs at each end between monitors/soundbars and computer?
Many thanks,
Ray

Thank you Chris for your contribution, however your comments are verbatium from the stuff I had already seen on-line and also do not address several of my specific points/queries.
Also, the idea that the User Manuals will tell you WHICH soundbars are suitable is plain wrong in the case of my two monitors - although they DO refer to soundbars, they DON'T specify models!
Whilst writing, I would also comment that, since I posted my original (and very first!) query, I have been bombarded with messages from the"Virtual Assistant" of the "Dell Community" requesting the "Service Tag / Express Service Code/ Order number" of my monitors. I don't think a monitor HAS one of those, so I responded with the Serial No, only to be told that my info couldn't be identified, could I send a photo of the label. I did that, only to be then told that it still couldn't be identified, could I send a pdf! How do you do THAT I asked?! Of course, I was only communicating with a computer, so the "answer" looped back to the beginning! All, I might add, bearing the "mission statement" - "Dell Cares"!!
Right - trying contacting Dell directly with a query and see how far you get.....

The article is clear to me?
E198WFP = AX510PA soundbar for Dell E series displays manufactured before February 2014
2408WFP = AX510 soundbar is for Dell P and U series displays manufactured before February 2014
Correct. The User's Guides just show you how to connect a Soundbar, not mentioning a specific Soundbar model.
Am I correct that the AX510 is suitable for the 2408WFP and the AX510PA is for the E198WFP?
* Yes. As the article stated.
Is the only difference a (separate?) power supply for the latter?
* Yes.
I have also read somewhere that the AS501 has better sound quality than the AX510.
* That is subjective.
would this model (AS501) be compatible with either or both of my monitors?
* AS501 for 2408WFP. AS501PA for E198WFP.
Although it would presumably need a separate power supply for the E198WFP?
* Correct.
Presumably I would also require a connecting cable with 3.5mm plugs at each end between monitors/soundbars and computer?
* Yes, as both of the User's Guides stated.

Even for an obvious person like me, it is almost “clear” that an E198WFP monitor is probably a member of the “Dell E series” - but less clear is in then understanding that a 2408WFP apparently belongs to one of the “Dell P and U series”.
I still believe that the “article” did NOT state that “the AX510 is suitable for the 2408WFP and the AX510PA is for the E198WFP” – it actually referred to the “E”, “P” & “U” series (see also previous paragraph).
I was (yet again) deficient concerning the audio connecting cable – it does indeed mention one in both User Guides (although only in the very late sections “Troubleshooting the Dell Soundbar” - and not a word in the sections about “Setting Up The Monitor” or “Connecting Your Monitor” – strange that). Also, if you peer very closely at the top two diagrams on page 34 of the 2408WFP User’s Guide, they do indeed show a USB cable running from the PC to the monitor (but not a word about it mind, and you won’t find anything similar in the E198WFP guide).
So, to attempt to summarize, we would seem to have been told that BOTH AS501 and AX510 soundbars are, indeed, compatible with BOTH E198WFP & 2408WFP monitors, except that you also need a separate soundbar power supply and audio lead direct to the PC in the former case (and that all of that was apparently in the User Guides all along….).
