3007WFP, cannot change resolution from 1280x800? #2
Hi all,
My 3007WFP was off for about a year, and recently I plugged it back in and I can't change the resolution to anything other than 1280x800 which now is also marked as recommended. Every time I attempt to change I get a different behavior per config, but most of them I get a black screen or some the weir colored lines. Has anyone been through this, and are there any solutions that one could do at home?
I tried few different things:
Scenario 1 Test:
DVI-D Dual Link cable is plugged in to the monitor. It is not single link cable. I confirm Dual link
Laptop is hooked to a Lenovo dock station that has the port for DVI-D Dual Link
Lenovo docking station is connected to Thinkpad Core i5 8th Gen
Scenario 2 tested:
DVI-D Dual Link cable is plugged in to the monitor.
The other end of DVI-D Dual Link cable is plugged in to USB Type C to DVI-I Adapter and that DVI adaptor is plugged in to laptop Type C USB port.
Lenovo docking station is connected to Thinkpad Core i5 8th Gen
Adaptor details:
Tried both option but the screen keeps going back to 1280 x 800
please help.

@RubberbandIT Happy to help! Ok, that does help somewhat. First, that USB-C to DVI adapter is almost certainly single link because it doesn't say anything about dual link. If you want to see examples of USB-C to Dual Link DVI adapters, here is one and here is another.
In terms of your docking station, the full page for that dock here indicates that widescreen display support maxes out at 1920x1200. So it won't run 2560x1440 either. And docks that rely on a typical USB port for video output like that one are generally a poor choice anyway because a) they rely on "indirect display" technology to carry video over USB, which never natively supported video (the way USB-C does), and indirect display technology has a lot of drawbacks I've written about in the post marked as the answer in this thread, and b) the dock can't power the attached system when it's connected via regular USB, as is possible with USB-C. Unfortunately one of the items that's still unknown about your setup is your exact system model, which means I can't recommend a suitable alternative dock if eliminating those drawbacks would be of interest to you. There may not be any compatible docks that support dual link DVI, but if your ThinkPad has a USB-C port, you would certainly have options for docks that had DisplayPort outputs that you could use with a DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter like this one or this one -- and you would have eliminated the indirect display issue and also be able to send power to the system from the dock.
Fair warning: I have not personally used any of the adapters I just linked. But the specs indicate that those are the types of adapters you'd need for your purposes, and Club3D and StarTech both have solid reputations for quality products -- although the reviews on these particular items do seem a bit low. But I didn't delve into that to figure out if they were from people who didn't know what they were doing or if there's some legitimate compatibility issue with certain systems or displays. But hopefully this gets you pointed in the right direction. You might even be able to run a search on the reviews and see if anybody mentions experience using any of them with your specific system and/or display model. Good luck!

@RubberbandIT Just because a DVI connector has all of the holes to accept the pins of a dual link DVI cable does not mean that the DVI output actually supports dual link DVI. ALL female DVI connectors have holes to accept all of those pins, but support for dual link DVI is relatively rare, partly because dual link DVI was never very popular at all. Back when it was introduced, the displays that needed it were so expensive that very few people could afford them, and by the time the cost of those displays had come down to make them accessible to more people, DisplayPort had arrived.
Unfortunately you didn't specify which Lenovo docking station you have -- there are several -- so I don't know whether your dock supports dual link DVI or whether it has a DisplayPort output. But if it has the latter, you could look for an active DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter. These are significantly more expensive than typical DisplayPort to DVI adapters -- probably because the rarity of dual link DVI means there's a small market and therefore no economy of scale -- and they also require being connected to a USB port for power in order to provide power for the active signal converter chip. Typical USB-C to DVI adapters won't support dual link DVI. But if you want to check the capabilities of your Lenovo dock's DVI output, take a look at this page, find your dock, and see what resolution it supports from its DVI output.
And lastly, as a general bit of advice, when asking for technical assistance, it helps to provide basic technical information so that the people here who are willing to help have something to work with. In this case, the exact dock model and system model you're using would have made sense to provide. Just saying you have a Lenovo docking station connected to some ThinkPad running a Core i5 8th Gen CPU doesn't help all that much. It's not like there's a ban on discussing non-Dell products here.

@jphughan First of all let me apologize for sending half sending half baked information. I wasn't really expecting a reply, I filled the details half heartedly. Great to see such a beautiful community out here helping others.
Attached the three pictures here for devices I am using. Does this help? I looked up the docking station page and it says: "Supports 24 different video resolutions up to 2048x1152 (LCD widescreen mode)". Please let me know if there is anything I am doing wrong here, would be great to get this big screen working.

@jphughan Wow - this is great! Thank you so much for your help again. Really appreciate it.
As you recommended I just order the Adaptor fingers crossed it should work!
Best to take the Docking station out of the mix and just link the monitor directly to the laptop.
Hopefully this set up should work.
I will certainly let you know as soon as I have tested the new set up with the dual link adaptor.
Thanks once again for your support here. Great Great community.
