cannot display video mode plz reply

when ever i install a new game and try to play it, a black screen comes up and says cannot display video mode. if any one can help me plz reply

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try changing the resolution to a lower setting to see if the game will play.

My friend is having the same trouble but she didn't load anything.  She just turned on the computer and it said that.  Everything I keep seeing says to change the resolution.  How do you do that if the monitor will not work at all?
