Dell 2208WFP webcam driver problem

Question

I have the Dell 2208 monitor and after installing the software, the webcam driver does not seem to want to load. I have an error that says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)."

I tried the recommended uninstall and reinstall, but same error. I also tried different USB ports, but same result. The computer is a Dell XPS 400 about 1.5 years old running Windows XP.

* Disconnect the monitor USB uplink cable from the PC
* Open up the Device Manager- Universal Serial Bus Controllers
* Count how many items are listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
* With both the PC and the monitor on, connect the monitor USB uplink cable to a USB port on the rear of the PC. Did any new items show up under Device Manager- Universal Serial Bus Controllers?

Thanks for the reply. There are 10 items without the monitor plugged in. After I plug it in I get three more, 2 generic USB hubs, and 1 that says USB composite device. As before, when I plug the USB cable in the system identifies the webcam, but then give me the error when loading the driver.

whisperwood, This monitor supports High-Speed Certified USB 2.0 interface. Does the device manager say under Universal Serial Bus controllers, USB2 Enhanced Host Controller?

Yes it does, and all other USB peripherals work fine. It has keyboard, mouse, and wireless USB connections.

I am experiencing the same problem. 2208WFP monitor connected to ATI Radeon HD 2400 graphics card (HDMI) in a Dell Dimension E510.   Under USB Controllers, I have USB2 Enhanced Host Controller listed (among others - see below).   Interesting (and annoying) is that it has also prevented my other imaging devices working - the scanner on my all-in-one Epson, plus my digital camera when connected.

Hi Chris,   Yes to both. XP SP2 Media Center edition. My Dimension E510 has 5 USB ports on the back. Have tried 2 different ones.   Cheers,   Ian

I have 9.0c too.   Chris - I haven't been able to try the other USB ports on the PC yet since I am traveling.   Not sure whether this is relevant, but the USB ports on the monitor actually work fine (e.g. can connect iPod).

After 3 hours of troubleshooting with several techs, Dell shipped me a replacement monitor. I hooked it up and same problem. Assume it's a driver problem that they need to work out for this monitor. Don't have 3 hours to run through phone support tonight, but thought I'd post this.

UPDATE: Spent 2 hours on phone with Dell Support with replacement monitor and same problem. No resolution and the tech suggested an incompatibility with my one year old XPS 400. Doubt that, assume driver problem since others are now posting similar problems. NOTE: plugged the monitor into my 4 year old PowerMac G5...works perfectly camera and all, no drivers, no settings, nothing. Just works!
