Dell UltraSharp U2311H Backlight Bleeding
Hi all,
Would like your feedback on some back light bleeding issues on the U2311H monitor which I just purchased.
What i'll like to find out is if there are other users out there facing the same problem, and if this is the the typical amount of back light bleeding which i can expect from the Dell monitor. If it happens that my monitor is defective, would it be possible to get a refund or an exchange?
Thanks alot!

You can initiate an exchange but you will never get one that is perfect. They all have this. If the Brightness and Contrast are maxed to 100 and you measure the brightness difference of any two points on the monitor, the brightness difference will never be greater than 25%. Which is our manufacturer specification. Unfortunately, the human eye can easily detect any 5% or 10% difference in brightness.

Hi, to the engineer who called me this afternoon, these are the other pictures which i was referring to.
The Left side. Taken with my desktop wallpaper as the background.
As compared to the Right.
Here is another image similar to the 1st one. Monitor was set to display a black background. Settings were at default, factory settings (Brightness 75/Contrast 75). Images were captured in a dim environment.

Hi, i have te same issue on my 2311 - gold tinting on left lower corner ... In dark room environment there is no possible to see correct blak at all.
At left to right, in horisontal, there is coloured screen issue - brown > dark blue. (The brightness level is 16)

We do not validate/test Dell monitors in a lab darker than 150 lms (lumens). At 150 lms, the perceived brightness/chromaticity non-uniformity is not as noticeable as say in a dark room at 50 lms. What you are seeing is within our current specification.

Thanks for answer. Is that "lms" figure mentioned somewhere in user manul? I allready suspect suchlike issue. Is the U2410 somewhat better in that "extremal environment" ?

I have never seen it in a manual. All of our monitors are tested in that same lighting.

The problem here is that your testing the monitor in a dark environment with a black background. As with LCD and Plasma TV's you shouldn't really be using it in total darkness - that will always destroy black level.
I have a top of the range 50inch Pioneer plasma with incredibly deep black levels but in total darkness the black level is destroyed.
There is a way to solve this though. Place a light behind the monitor - ideally a white light. It doesn't have to be super bright but as soon as you place a light source behind the unit the black level should look great.
On my tv I use some led lights that are placed on the back of the set which output a nice 6500K white light. This way I can have all the lights off for watching a movie but the set retains it's awesome inky blacks.
I am about to receive my two U2311's this week so will be testing this out myself - though I see no reason why the same won't apply here.
The important detail with LCD displays is that you should not be watching in total darkness. Its not only going to affect black level and show up backlight bleed but is also bad for the eyes.
Hope this helps.
