E153FPc and E173FPc monitors in Powersave Mode

These are not DVI connected monitors.   This is not a video card problem.

I now have two Dell  monitors that are stuck in Powersave mode.  One was on a BELKIN keyboard/monitor multiplexor and the other on a HP/Compaq computer.  Each has been connected to several other computers in hopes of fixing this problem.

This is the same behavior as all the DVI reports.  However, these only have vga ports.

I am not sure if any technical support will help.  I'm may just be asking if repair is possible or looking for some co-misery here.

ashemha,

Monitor STFC (Self Test Feature Check)
* Turn off the monitor
* Plug the monitor power cord directly into the wall socket to remove any surge protectors or APCs from the troubleshooting equation
* Unplug the monitor video cable from the back of the computer
* Turn on the monitor
* The floating red/green/blue/white dialog box should appear on screen against a black background. What appears?

Preparing both monitors by unplugging their power, then unplugging them from computer:

E153FPc  - Disconnected
Disconnected/power on - black screen with power button green
Press OSD button - get "Power Save Mode... Press Key or Move Mouse"Back to black in a couple of seconds - power button turns to amber

E153FPc - Connected
power on - black screen with power button green
Screen displays for approx. 1 second
Back to black - actually just no backlight - can still see faint display
Press OSD button - get faint (no backlight)  "Power Save Mode... Press Key or Move Mouse"

E173FPc - Disconnected
Color Bars floating
Press OSD - nothing

E173FPc - Connected
Black
Press OSD button - get "Power Save Mode... Press Key or Move Mouse"

Are these Dell Monitors that bad? I have a 173 black screen. Tested and no go. When plugged to video card it will say in power save mode when you push the OSD button. Then goes to black. Have disconnected it and tried the test. Power light stays green. Once out of every 10 or 11 attempts the 4 color bars will flash on in the bottom left corner for 1/2 a second.

I assume the monitor is fried. Unfortunately, the 3000 computer is from 04 and is out of Warranty even though the monitor only has at most 100 hours on it and looks like it just came out of the box.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good quality monitor at a reasonably price. I wouldn't buy another Dell or any of their peripherals for that matter. From what I've read it It's not worth fixing them. And even if fixed I wouldn't trust the longevity.

Yes, these are Dell branded monitors.   Unfortunately, the response from the Dell Forum Liaison is the standard response to these reports.  (Believe me, I have read many trying to find a solution.)

I might be willing to repair if I could know that would work, but these are getting so cheap now and it might not be worth it.

Most solutions speak to the DVI problem but I haven't seen any that address a straight vga connection.  It seems this should be a firmware issue that could be reset somehow.  But, I guess not.

Good Luck!  I have been reading about this problem for months and have yet to find a solution to these VGA LCD monitors acting like this.   I sent my PID to the "Dell Liaison" but have heard nothing back.

I am confident these are trash and cannot be repair.  But would at least like to have someone officially say, "There is no solution to this problem."

At least the DIY projector buffs have a new source for LCD panels!

Obviously Dell has a very serious problem with these monitors. They were not built correctly. The liaison also asked me for the 20 digit number and I have never received a response. It would be nice if they just told the people that the monitors were defective and if out of warranty then tough luck. However, I think that you can expect to get more than 100 hours out of a monitor (which was approximately what I got out of mine) I have a Samsung purchased at about the same time had a problem they sent me a new one and picked up the old one at their expense. The problem wasn't a completely dead monitor like the Dell. Because of their customer service, or lack of it, it is unlikely that I would buy another Dell product. The forums are great but it seems that is the only way to find out about a problem. Then you really never get a direct answer from Dell. To speak to someone to find out if something is bad requires a support contract or extended warranty and I'm not sure it even covers monitors. Very, very time consuming. Perhaps they figure you will just go buy another monitor, which I did, and go away. The problem is I just don't think that it's the proper way to treat customers.

So the screen goes to black. When this occurs, what color is the power button LED?

I have the same problem with an E172FPb - connected, it's black, hit OSD, it says it is in 'Power Save Mode, Hit any key or move mouse'. Disconnected, power on, hit OSD for self test, it flashes for half a second in lower left corner, then black. In both instances the power button is green. Any ideas? Thanks

The Monitors are junk and you won't find an answer in this forum. I submitted numbers to the moderator at their request in a private message but never heard a word. I would not buy any perephial product from Dell in the future. I probably, because of their CSR department. wouldn't consider any type of Dell product in the future.

I replaced the monitor with a Acer 20" unit for 150.00 with shipping and am very pleased with it. Unfortunately you can't even get a monitor repaired for that price. So the Dell is junk and will end up in a landfill or recycling plant. Shouldn't be that way but it is.

From what I understand is that the monitors have a very short life as they were manufactured incorrectly. However, Dell will not admitt to any problem and the moderators will not come out and say it

saraujo_pitc,

Do we know if there are any software or firmware updates?
* No.

Any driver issues?
* No.

Chris,

This seems to be a band aid and not the cure.  If this is not under warranty then it appears that the monitor will have to be replaced with a new one.  Do we know if there are any software or firmware updates?  Any driver issues?  Please advise.

Thank you
