E2414 resolution problem on Mac

I just got a E2414HTt for my late 2013 macbook pro running El Capitan 10.11.1

When I set the resolution to 1920 x 1080 (the max resolution for the monitor) I get a black bar on the left side of the screen.  All other resolutions result in a stretched display because the aspect ratio is wrong.

I'm using a VGA adapter on my mac to connect.  I could get a DVI adapter instead, but I don't want to buy that if it won't fix the problem.

Any help would be appreciated

The monitor OSD (On Screen Display) Display Settings Aspect Ratio should be set to Wide 16:9. The bottom Resolution and Maximum Resolution as 1920x1080 60Hz. If the left Resolution is not correct, this is an Apple graphics display issue. Unfortunately, Dell does not test/validate most of our monitor models on Apple proprietary hardware, ports, and software. For Apple display settings, you should post on the Apple Discussions Forum.
