everybody wants to know (Dell Flat Monitors)

I ordered 1703FP... because I liked it in our hospital CRISP!!!! even with
analog connection and on board intel videocard

Got 1703FPt made in China by Down Wong something ...
it is not the same...it does not have the same quality:

- lacking very reach Black (like monitor in the Hospital)

- the letters  on the desktop  have (from  the  right side) one pixel thick light white shadow

I have tried every thing ....1024X1280resolution, 60MHZ, gamma, contrast
and ...... still  same , I even connected my laptop to it ...same.... seemed like
it was the monitor problem (I have 32 sis AGP video with analog out ,
pentium 4  1.5,  intel motherboard)

Then I learned that Dell has:

1703FPt made by Lite-On and

- Dell 1703FPs made by Samsung

Monitor in our Hospital was1703FPs made by Samsung made in Mexico.
I know all of these have same specifications but I you think there is a LCD quality difference.

what can I do in this situation
Is there any way to improve the quality (by video card or  something...

Or may be I should
send it back and order 1703FPs (if it possible) or 1704FPV?

I did not ordered 1703FPV at first time because I thought it was new and not reliable model.

Is 1703FPV really better then 1703FPt beside contrast ratio?

thank you in advance
Tigran

PS   on phone customer support was totally useless

Hey Hey HEy Merry Christmas

I solve the problem

Monitor is Great

I bought new video card s 9550 AGP 256MB

Analog connection had same performance as before "text ghosting"

but when I  connected monitor via DVI digital cable - miracle ....ghosting disappeared , black became very reach and deep

So I think   it is not important how fast/new is your video card ..............

YOU JUST NEED TO HAVE DIGITAL CONNECTION - DVI

people who say that difference between analog and digital connection is small are wrong ...difference is HUGE

now I do not care that monitor was made by Dong Guan (t)  and not by Samsung (s)

...........they are identical IMHO

.......................

dell phone support was very useless and notprofesional

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check out DVI on my video card, and if I have it. That's probably the issue.

I just bought a Dell 1703fp lcd monitor and I have the same problem. The text seems to have a white 'ghosting' to it, and is not always clear and sharp. I think my old crt has clearer text over all. I spoke to a tech and he didn't really know; suggested I may want to return it. Question is, if I'd like to replace it with another Dell lcd since they get excellent ratings in pcworld tests that I've seen. But I don't want to get another one of poor quality. Andif this is the best I can expect, maybe I have to look elsewhere or just keep my old crt for now.

Any suggestions or ideas on why the lcd quality isn't so good? Could it be the model or manufacture of the monitor?

I have the 1703 FP model, and it looks very good set up with the DVI ( Digital ) mode.  The digital connection should give a clearer crisper picture, but not by much over the analog I have heard.   I do not have the integrated video as you are using, but a dedicated video card that has a DVI output.  I set my system to 1280x1024 as requried for this monitor and 60 Hz as well.  I also have the windows xp Clear Type on, if you have not done so, try it.

Also, the video card driver may be at fault, not sure.  You should un-install the driver, use a driver cleaner, than re-install the driver again to see if this works.  Again, not sure if this will work, but its worth a try.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=752253 Link to a forum that has an article that states why you should use a driver cleaner and how to do it.

Make sure you have the newest driver for that video card or integrated video some where handy to re-load

Good to hear this DVI worked for you.  Some have said its only a minor difference and now you have proved them wrong.  Good for you

My lcd monitor doesn't work when I plug the DVI connector in. I get a black monitor or a floating red/green/blue bar like I have no signal. Does anyone know what else I need to do to get this working from DVI? Thanks.

I have a Radeon 9700. I found out that it's probably not compatible with a DVI LCD connection, so I may update the video card.

LCD 1703fpv
I don't yet have a DVI capable video card, so maybe the picture brightness will change. But the screen is brighter, and in some cases it's very noticeable, especially in some games. Is that normal? I can't seem to do much with the monitor settings since adjusting the brightness down just darkens the screen but the pics are already kind of washed out. What do others find using these LCDs? Is the fix to exchange this monitor for a less bright one? Is there anything else I can do? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Try this : Control Panel - Adobe Gamma

DVI connection will fix that problem, and when you have digital connection contrast is fixed you could not change it

If your card has DVI "out" it means it is compatible with DVI as i said before after you connect monitor try to turn it off and off (green button on the front panel of the monitor)

Avoian, I did like you said. I hooked the monitor to the DVI again, and pressed the buttons on the front panel - the '+' button seemed to allow the monitor to work. Before this time, after connecting to the DVI I would get a black screen and pressing power on/off or the menu button didn't give me any display.

The display seems a lot better now. Much clearer text. I also went into the control panel and checked out the gamma color - I believe that's what you meant with the adobe gamma. Still testing it out now for colors. But running off of the DVI connection, finally.

Thanks to all!

Ok, I'm already using the driver from the CD that came with the monitor; I just checked to try and install to make sure. I think things are good now. Thanks.
