I just done a reformat and reinstall of Windows xp from the reinstallation disk that came with pc (inspiron 2400) I am unable to change the display settings on the monitor (Dell 1703FP) I have a disk that says it has the drivers (inf, icm and cat files, but it doesn't install the drivers when I put the disk in the drive. I don't want to do anything really stupid and mess up something. What do I need to do? I only have the display of 640x480 and no other choice. When I click settings/troubleshoot/advanced/monitor everything is greyed out and the monitor is ...default monitor. I have the resource cd that has device drivers, diagnostics and utilities. Can someone please advise me as to what I should do?

Are you sure your display drivers are installed properly? The display drivers will drive the resolution. Sounds like to me you have the generic VGA drivers installed, hence the inability to see anything beyond 640x480. What vid card do you have?
I told you I'm a dummy ...I checked under video and there were 5 different ones and none had that exact name. There were 2 that were recommended...845 g/gl integrated video....intel grantsdale g interrated
Just googled...looks like the 845g/gl integrated would have the same driver. Install that driver and you should be set. Good luck!
I am a real dummy when it comes to this. I checked my invoice...would this be it? (integrated intel3d agp graphics ) I looked in device manager and there is yellow flag for other devices adn whe I check the properties of video controller (vga compatble) it tells me driver not installed.

Bingo! Your device driver (graphics driver) is not installed. I would go to DELL.com, type in your service tag and download the most recent graphic drivers for your integrated graphics card (integrated intel3d agp). Once the install is complete...reboot and enjoy the much improved graphics. Good luck!
I'm good to go with the display now. I still have problems. I have three flags in device manager. under Other Devices...eithernet controller, multimedia audio controller and sm bus controller. I have no idea what the sm bus controller is.
Someone sent me a direct link to the file. It installed without a hitch...no more flags. Everthing else was on the resource disk. I am new to the forum and had a few problems getting around. I couldn't figure out how to post that the problem was solved. The forum was a very big help to me.

Excellent to hear! The SM Bus controller...is basically your motherboard chipset controller that drives, IDE, Firewire, SCSI. If there is a download on dell for your service tag that pertains to chipset driver....that would most likely clear up the device warnings. Good Luck!
