Monitor is blank and blinking amber by Student hacker

I am in a school and a student has somehow set several monitor to not show anything, black screen, and a blinking amber light. While messing around I was pushing several of the buttons and holding a couple in and all of a sudden the screen came on.  So my question is this, is there some sort of setting to shut off the screen on a monitor and make it appear like it is broke? It would appear holding certain buttons in a certain sequence will turn it back on, but I don't know what that is.
