I was having this problem with my monitor but only during startup, resulting in a hangup at the welcome screen (computer becomes unresponsive and no solution I found worked except turning the power off). I went to the system configuration utility (start, run, "msconfig") and by elimination what finally worked was turning off the NVDIA monitor application. This solved my problem, but I came to the message boards to find out why this happened and why I had my computer for just over a year before it started. I'm still looking...

Once I disabled the video driver, it appeared to be fixed. Then I returned to the Dell support site and found a thread which provided me with a new driver and downloaded it. Then I went and did all the windows updates that I could (it took forever, dial up is so slow!) and now it seems to be working fine. Here is the link to the thread about the driver: http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Type.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=6&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&DeviceID=2836
Of course, you will have to check to make sure that this is the correct driver for your system. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions.
