monitor: out of range
i have had this dell dimension 4500 for 3 years now, and no problems. now all of a sudden when running certain programs (many of which used to work), i get a black screen with a blue message "out of range". i havent changed my resolution, refresh rate...i havent changed any of the video settings in three years. it is set to 1280x960, 32 bit color, and 60hZ refresh rate. lowering the resolution, color quality, and/or refresh rates has no effect on the message. i have the E771a monitor, and a GeForce 2 mx400 video card, and am running windows XP Home Edition SP2.
the software i have noticed this affecting is mostly game software, so it isnt exactly imperative that i get this fixed...but it does kind of bug me when things dont work that should. the software list is :Hellfighter 32, Pocket Tanks, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War Demo, and Tribes 2. tribes 2, war40k, and pocket tanks are completely unplayable, while hellfighter works *sometimes*. hellfighter, pocket tanks, and tribes 2 used to work, but no longer do.
it isnt XP sp2, because these problems started before i installed the service pack.
any help you could give me is much appreciated.

yes, i have tried lower resolutions (including 1024x768 at 75hZ)...no joy. but thanks.
to be more accurate...when pocket tanks amd tribes 2 caused the error, i couldnt get out of the games at all. even restarting the computer manually, windows xp would restart, login...and then show the error. the only way to fix it was to restart the computer in VGA mode, and then manaully reset the video settings. restarting in safe mode, and then starting the computer in a lower resolution didnt help either.
and does anyone have any idea what would cause the monitor to suddenly start hating my software? if a monitor is going bad, could that be the problem? keep in mind it is three years old...probably closer to 4 actually...
