Monitor Reset, Self-Test, Built-in Diagnostic
How to Run Diagnostic Test on a Dell Monitor
No cables, no peripherals, power button reset
* Turn the PC off
* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect every cable (including the power cable) and peripheral from every port on the monitor
* If a mechanical monitor power button, press the button in for 8 seconds (clears any residual power in the circuits). If not a mechanical power button, just wait 8 seconds
* Reconnect only the power cable to the monitor
* Turn the monitor on
- If functional, you should see a floating, "No cable" message
- If you do not see the "No cable" message, the monitor is faulty
Factory Reset in the OSD Menu
- Press the Menu button on the monitor to open the OSD Menu
- Press the down arrow button to scroll to the Other Settings option
- Press the Selection button. Now press the down arrow button and select the Factory Reset option
- Press the Selection button to reset the monitor settings
* Click Here
* On the left by the disk icon, click softMCCS
* It will download to your computer. I saved it to my Desktop
* Double-click the saved sm_setup.exe file
* Click yes if asked
* Click Next
* Choose "I accept this agreement"
* Click Next
* Click Next
* Click Next
* Click Next
* Click Next
* Check "Create a desktop icon"
* Click Next
* Click Install
* The check is on "Launch softMCCS"
* Click Finish
* Be sure that your monitor is listed at the top, then click Cancel
* Scroll down to Preset operations
* By Restore factory defaults , click the green Restore arrow
* The display will black out and then return
* By Restore factory lumunance/contrast defaults , click the green Restore arrow
* By Restore factory geometry defaults , click the green Restore arrow
* By Restore factory color defaults , click the green Restore arrow
* Close the softMCCS box
* Click yes to save your changes
Steps to perform the Self-Test
- Turn off both your computer and the monitor
- Unplug all monitor video cables from the computer
- Turn on the monitor
The floating dialog box should appear on screen against a black background. While in self-test mode, the power LED remains white. Also, depending upon the selected input, one of the dialog boxes shown below will continuously scroll through the screen.
- This box also appears during normal system operation, if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged
- Turn off your monitor and reconnect the cabling to the computer
Steps to perform the BID (Built-in Diagnostics)
Your monitor has a BID that helps you determine if the issue you are seeing is an inherent problem with your monitor, or with your computer, video card, video card driver, or cable.
Note: You can only run the BID when the video cable is unplugged and the monitor is in Self-Test mode.
For models launched prior to March 2016 =
* Turn the computer off
* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect the power cord from the monitor
* Disconnect ALL other cables from the monitor
* Press and hold in the monitor power button for 10 seconds
* Reconnect ONLY the monitor power cord to the monitor
* Turn the monitor on
* At the same time, press and hold buttons #1 and #4. A gray screen will appear
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to red
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to green
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to blue
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to black
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to white
* Press Button 4. The color of the screen changes to text
* Press Button 4 to Exit the BID
For models launched after March 2016 =
* Turn the computer off
* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect the power cord from the monitor
* Disconnect ALL other cables from the monitor
* Press and hold in the monitor power button for 10 seconds
* Reconnect ONLY the monitor power cord to the monitor
* Turn the monitor on
* Press button 1 for five seconds
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to red
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to green
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to blue
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to black
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to white
* Press Button 1. The color of the screen changes to text
* Press Button 1 to Exit the BID
If the BID full colored screens do not show the issue, the monitor is functioning. The problem is with either the computer, video card, video card driver, or cable.
If the BID full colored screens did show the issue, create a thread on the Monitors Forum board and post pictures of the BID full colored screens showing the issue.
