Monitor won't return from power save

I have searched for this and read a lot of other topics on it, but have not found an answer that applies to me yet. The monitor is 2709W connected via DVI to a Radeon 9800 Pro which I got in 2003, so it's quite old. The computer (Win XP SP2) boots up just fine, it works just fine, but if left idle, the power saving kicks in. I can't bring it back from this without manually resetting the computer.

I've updated the graphics drivers, updated the monitor drivers (it was previously just plug and play standard windows driver), and I've tried connecting it via VGA, too, and the problem persists. If I simply switch the display off, then back on again, it won't come back. However, I can connect my Xbox 360 to it with a VGA cable, and it works perfectly fine, and can be switched on and off. As I run my 360 through this display too, I often flick between console and PC when looking for game help, so I'm wondering if this constant flicking between display modes has caused this problem.

Is there a fix to this, or do I have faulty hardware? Thanks.

Greeting,

I've had this problem before and it ended up being my graphics card dieing.  If you have an old or a spare graphics card, trying swapping it out and seeing if it works, or even try re-seating the card in the AGP/PCI slot.  My monitor did the exact same thing, would go to sleep but wouldn't wake back up unless I rebooted... Then finally a few days later I got no signal on the screen and my pc wouldn't boot at all.  So i popped in a different graphics card, and viola, it worked.

It was a good excuse to get a GTX 260 for my XPS 700 :emotion-5:
