Newbie questions regarding 2001fp

1) Do they show up as 'removable drives' when you plug something in or not at all? If not at all, did you run the included USB cable from the monitor to a USB port on your PC? If they do show up, do you mean they work for some things but not others?

2) Yes, those would be 'dead' or 'stuck' pixels - as long as you've touched them to ensure they're not lint or any foreign particles on the screen. If they really bother your or you are up for a challenge, you can try to return the monitor - not sure if Dell has a minimum number that must be in that condition before the monitor can be exchanged, but some vendors do. I've also seen reported that sometimes a 'stuck' pixel can be corrected by very gently massaging it - seriously. That or there are a couple of 'screen exercisers' you can download that run through all colors one after the other, over and over. Sometimes that can unstick them. Google should turn something up.  Dead, however, is dead.

3) I never checked them out as I wouldn't consider using speakers built into a monitor... but that's just me. :smileywink:

I believe I installed the 3 cables properly as per the diagram that came with the monitor.  I didn't see any "removable" drives show up when I connected my Ipod or my Cruzer Mini.  The Cruzer Mini did flash for a second but that was it.  I have noticed others asking the same question about the USB ports although some had models other than the 2001. 

Three cables? I guess... one monitor to video card, one monitor to USB port and number three would be? Power? In any case...

I've got both a 2001FP and a 2405FPW on my two machines here. The 2405 has four 'media' slots which show up a removable drives when it's properly cabled up. The two USB ports that both monitors have don't show up unless used and should cause a 'bong bong' from the PC (and be recognized) when something official is poked into them.

As an experiment, if you have a cable going from a USB port to the monitor and your Cruzer isn't recognized when plugged into either port on the monitor, unplug the cable. Plug the Cruzer directly into the same port on your pc that you had connected to the monitor. If it works there, then I'd guess either the cable or the monitor ports are bad. If it doesn't work there, then something else is going on. Repeat with the other USB ports. Let us know!

Ok, I found the problem. Stupid me. I must have canceled the action required to install the driver for the Generic USB Hub initially. I did this properly and all is well. Thanks for helping.

Thanks for the response Chulett. The third cable is indeed the power cable. I tried your suggestion of removing the USB cable to the computer and plugging in the Mini dircetly. It worked fine that way. I then tried plugging the USB cable back directly from the monitor to the computer and got the bong-bong sound. Unfortunately, none of the USB ports(4) worked when I plugged the Mini into them. No sound. The only thing was a very brief flash from the Mini and then no obvious recognition of the device being there.

I did a search of this USB problem in this forum and noticed quite a few who had the exact same problem. Some recommended downloading drivers which I tried. One suggested downloading SP-A which I didn't recognize. Some didn't connect the USB cable initially. One persone had a whole new monitor shipped to him with the same exact problem. Weird.
