Optimal Resolution fo LCD monitors. Where do I find it?

Where would I go to find information about the “Optimal” resolution for LCD monitors? My specific concern is what brand / size monitor would I use to view a resolution close to 1024X768. It seems the larger the monitor, the higher the resolution (the smaller the text and image). For instance the monitor I just received is a 20” Wide Screed LCD monitor (Dell 20in E207WFP) and its native / optimal resolution is 1680X1050. Which chat room or community forum do you suspect will help me the most? I know each display has its own “sweet spot” for its optimal resolution. But it is different for each manufacturer and size of monitor. And it is not listed in any spec that I have seen so far. I found the resolution for the monitor I just received when I opened the box. It was on the front of the screen.

The optimal, or native resolution is usually listed in the monitor description. You can also find full specifications for Dell monitors in the manuals .
There are some exceptions, but these are the most common LCD native resolutions.
regular aspect ratios:
15"  1024x768  (4:3)
17"  1280x1024  (5:4)
19"  1280x1024  (5:4)
20"  1600x1200  (4:3)
widescreen (16:10):
17"  1440x900
19"  1440x900
20"  1680x1050
22"  1680x1050
24"  1920x1200
27"  1920x1200
30"  2560x1600
Also, recently some 16:9 widescreens have begun appearing with 1920x1080 resolution.

Thank you. This is the information I was looking to find. If I want to stay with 1024 X 768, smaller is better. But if I want to get a larger screen, I better get a different set of eyes. I suppose the only real sane thing to do would be to go to the nearest Big Box store, stand in front of the different size monitors and change the resolution until I find a combination that works for me. Bummer! I wanted it to be easier than this. :-(

Thank you again for the information.

I have a related question?  Have a Dell D630 notebook with an NVIDIA Quadro 135M video card upgrade.  I am thinking of buying a Dell S2409W monitor to use with the D630.  The  NVIDIA Quadro 135M in the D630 has a max digital resolution of 1600x1200, and a max analog resolution of 2048x1536 which equate to the 4:3 aspect ration.  The S2409W monitor only has a DVI input and has a max resolution of 1920x1080, which is the HD 16:9 aspect ratio.

So, will the 135M drive the S2409M?  Will the image be cropped or distorted in order to fill the S2409W screen?

I don't know anyone who has this monitor and there are no Dell stores or kiosks anywhere near where I live so I don't really have a way to try the S2409 before I buy.
