Let's backup. A video card HDMI cannot upconvert to a monitor DP using a straight cable. You would have to purchase a $120 active converter to do this. The straight cable you purchased is designed to do = Video card DP to Monitor HDMI
Inspiron 15R 5520 video out ports = VGA, HDMI P2214H video in ports = VGA, DVI, DP
So if you want to use HDMI out from the laptop, you need a HDMI to DVI straight cable.
Thank you for your response. I figured that out after doing some more research here on the Dell community site. Would I get a better picture using an active converter or running a HDMI to DVI cable? I'm using this monitor for photo editing with Photoshop and I need the most accurate colors possible.

No. The maximum resolution for all the monitor ports is 1920x1080 so it would not make a difference.
