P2418HZm, webcam work with Apple macOS?

Hello!

I have just been provided with the Dell P2418HZm by work for use at home. But I can’t get the webcam to work with a MacBook Pro (late 2011 edition).

The P2418HZm is connected to my laptop via DisplayPort as well as the USB upstream cable provided with the P2418HZm.

The P2418HZm is working perfectly, and the USB ports on the P2418HZm are also working fine. So I presume all the connections are correct and plugged in properly.

But the P2418HZm integrated webcam does not appear as an option in any video conference software or in system settings.

I have been trying for a while to get this working (i.e. read the manual and googling) and found others online with the same problem.

In places some have said “It won’t work as Dell don’t make a driver for Apple macOS.”.

Yet in other places people claim to have plugged in to a Mac and everything works perfectly.

So, can anyone confirm if it is possible to get the webcam working on a MacBook? If the answer is no then I can get on with my life and if the answer is yes, then, any suggestions for something to try?

The manual says at least USB 2.0 is required for webcam functionality, which my laptop model has.

I also tried it on the other laptop in the house (a Lenovo Chromebook) and couldn’t make it work either. But if it is a driver issue then it may be the same problem.

Hi again

Problem solved.

I took the monitor into my IT services department. We tried with a different P2418HZm - and it worked immediately.

We could not get the original P2418HZm camera to work on any other system so can only assume it was a hardware fault with that particular monitor.

Also, neither the P2418HZm driver page nor the P2418HZm User's Guide mention Apple macOS as being supported. * But first, start with the basics. Is the webcam cover shutter open? Yes

* Setting up the monitor webcam as default setting (page 58) ("...in the device manager interface, you can find the notebook built-in webcam and the monitor webcam...")

In MacOS I guess the equivalent is "System Information" which shows all devices currently connected.

There is an entry for P2418HZm under "Graphics/Displays" and "USB" which I presume correspond to the monitor display and the montior USB ports.

But under "Camera" there is only one entry (the camera builtin to the laptop) - I would guess this is where the integrated monitor webcam should appear if it were working.

Yes it would be useful to confirm that it isn't a problem with the webcam itself.

Unfortunately the only other machine I have access to is a Lenovo Chromebook (on which it doesn't work ... but, as far as I can tell this is not a supported OS so that doesn't really prove anything).

I will try and source a Windows machine to try it on, though we are under lockdown right now so a little tricky.

Any other suggestions gratefully received!
