P2722HE, laptop, home PC, setup help

Question

Hi,

I have just bought the hub monitor as often flicking between my work laptop and home PC and thought this would be a good monitor to have. The laptop works great with the USB C but what do I need to do to be able to use my PC as well without having to unplug the USB dongle for my mouse and keyboard and moving it?

Also I bought the slim sound bar that clicks underneath but only get sound from the laptop, do I need to set it up better?

Any help would be appreciated

@actionward  To use USB peripherals connected to the display with a system, a USB data path has to exist between the system and display. If your laptop is using USB-C, then that cable can carry video, USB data, and power all over that one cable. But if you have another system using some other input for video, then those inputs will not carry USB data — which is also why the soundbar won’t work, since it’s fundamentally just another USB device. Unfortunately that display’s only 'upstream' USB connector to a system is its USB-C port. Other displays have multiple upstream USB ports specifically to facilitate switching between two source systems, including switching attached USB peripherals, but the P2722HE isn’t one of them. The higher-end U2722HE is though. It has one USB-C port that works like the one you have, and then another one that operates only as a USB upstream interface (meaning no video or power support), and it even comes with a USB-C to USB-A 'regular USB' cable if you need to connect to a system that doesn’t have a USB-C port.

Thanks jphughan, I almost bought the higher end model you discussed which is probably where I am getting confused. I wonder if I bought a USB-C PCI that would work as then would only have to change that cable depending on what I am doing which would be a lot easier.

@actionward  Happy to help. An even easier solution than a USB expansion card — which I presume you’re considering to gain a USB-C port on your desktop? — would be a female USB-C to male USB-A adapter, which you could then just keep plugged into a USB-A port on your desktop. Just make sure you get one rated for at least USB 3.x Gen 1 (5 Gbps), since some are only rated for USB 2.0 because they’re primarily meant to be used for charging.
