Power Save Mode
Throughout the last six months I've come across computers at my work with monitors that just wont display at all. Instead I get the message, "Monitor is in power save mode, activate using PC." Now this is happening when the PC is booted and running. Beyond turning on the PC's power, how can you activate the monitor? Is this message an indication of some other problem?

I had all the same problems above and just checked the back of my computer and found a second female connector for my flatbed panel (not color coded). You would think that you should plug the color coded blue connector into the color coded blue slot, but that's not the case. I plugged into the second female adaptor slot, and it appears to be fine now. They should put something in the packaging materials that tells you to plug it into the second slot for a flatbed. Go figure, that would make it too easy.

We just had the same issue with our monitors saying it was in the Power Save Mode - it had a completely black screen. The Dell technician said that we had to use an adapter for the monitor cable (it was a small white adapter that we previously had no idea what to do with it) and plug it in to a different place on the CPU. He said it had something to do with the graphics card. As soon as we used the adapter and plugged it in to the different plug, the screen immediately came back on.

my power options and have them on never turn off. I also disabled my power management in the bios. I have swaped the dvi leads from one monitor to the other and swaped the inputs and still the monitor is in
power save mode. I have took the monitor to work and tryed it on a dell
computer with a dvi input. And still it is stuck in power save mode. I have changed my ram and re-installled my graphic card in safe mode and still it is the same. My computer has been pulled apart all week. I have searched the forum for a answer and failed. I can get a analog signal but i bought this monitor for the DVI interface. I also have uninstalled my graphic
card driver(Gforce 4 tie 4600) and tryed several differnent drivers and
still the same. It seems that some how the graphic card is not sending a signal to the monitor but how come when i tryed it at work it still did not work. Some how i think this monitor is screwed. I am absolutely baffled. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and i dont mean "have you tryed pressing the buttons on the front"

I, too, had the "Power Save" problem. Finally I reached Ron, a highly competent person, who told me that I have to attach the Y-shaped cable (that was included) to the computer and then the monitor hookup to it. The part of the Y that I hooked it to matched the color of the monitor plug (blue) as well. Even as we spoke, I got a full color screen and could proceed.
I had wondered what those were for because there was nothing in any of my literature that I could find that mentioned the Y cables. Anyway, I hope this helps others as it helped me!

OK, hope this helps someone.
This is what happened to me:
* Got new Optiplex in Aug 2003
* Set up using DVI cable with white 'ends' and the Y adapter for this ( has two white ends and a black end )
This came with the computer.
* Everything worked fine
* Did the windows updates from the internet.
* Rebotted and had the same 'Power Save' problem as everyone else here.
Tried a bunch of things *including* putting a different analog monitor on but didn't work. Windows key + enter did not work. Rebooting of course didn't work.
Anyway, here is what finally worked for me (based on a different post in this dell forum)
* Unplug monitor from my 'octopus' power strip.
* Plug into the wall directly.
* Use the white DVI cords and Y adapter as described above.
* Reboot computer.
So once it was working I right clicked, went into properties -> screen saver -> power -> Power Schemes
Set always on. Set all else to never. Click Hibernate tab and turn off hibernation.
Hope this helps someone else out there but may not work for you as different things seem to be working for different people.

A follow up to my previous post.
So, I thought all was OK but then found out that the computer still had the problem upon re-booting with the ethernet cable plugged in (I had taken it out previously). I removed the ethernet cable and unplugged the computer and monitor for 5 minutes (doing this for a second didn't seem to work) then turned them back on and booted up. Now the computer was able to boot up and the monitor worked again at least. Once the machine is booted up with the monitor working I can plug the ethernet cable in and access the internet. However, if I reboot the same problem comes back. Obviously this isn't acceptable.
Dell support, here is my question now: How do I use my $2,500 with the ethernet cable actually plugged in?

I don't know if this fixed the problem or not (time will tell) but it's worth a try for everyone here.
Go to windows update
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
and check out the driver updates. I just downloaded one for the Dell 1800 FP Monitor (or something similar). Maybe there is also one for the 17,19,20,... monitors also I hope this fixes the problem (fingers crossed).
If it is a fix why didn't Dell post it here though ?

Just curious, does this work for PS/2 keyboards and USB keyboards?
