S2716DG, refresh rate capped at 120Hz

Hey all, I’m running an AMD RX 7900 XTX, and it's working great. The only issue I'm having is that my S2716DG is only running at 120Hz, when it should be 144Hz. It was previously working at 144Hz with my Nvidia GPU.

My monitor is a Dell S2716DG which is a G-Sync monitor. I understand G-Sync won't work with AMD cards, but I was thinking I could still use it at 144Hz? I've checked the display settings in Windows, and it only lets me select 120Hz. I also tried installing the S2716DG drivers, but that didn’t help either.

I'm thinking of maybe buying a newer DisplayPort cable to see if that helps, but I'm doubtful.

Any help would be appreciated before I spend ~$350 on a new monitor.

Thanks!

Hey tFlux411, I confirmed with AMD support that 144hz won’t work with that monitor unfortunately.

I ended up buying a new Dell monitor (S2721DGF) that also supports Freesync, and it’s working great at 165hz now.

I thought that 144Hz was only capable when Nvidia G-Sync was turned on in the Nvidia control panel. Does the AMD control panel give you an option for FreeSync or Adaptive Sync to at least test before purchasing another monitor?

Hi Cheekyfellow,

Were you able to resolve this issue with your monitor?  I actually have the identical issue after switching from a Nvidia GPU to an AMD RX7900 XTX on a Dell S2716DG and came across your post when searching for a resolution.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Unfortunately there was nowhere in AMD Adrenalin software to do so. I tried a custom resolution where you can choose 144hz, but it wouldn’t work.

I ended up reaching out to AMD and they confirmed it won’t work, so I was forced to buy a Freesync enabled monitor.
