S2721DGF, HDMI, Laptop, no audio

Question

Hello community and support. Finally decided to write about the issue I've been having long enough but didn't bother to get an answer for so far.

My S2721DGF audio out is connected via jack to a set of Edifier stereo speakers. My PC is connected to monitor via DP and I have no issues with getting the sound on the speakers (S2721DGF is chosen as the audio device in Windows).

However, when I connect the monitor via HDMI (port 1 or 2 is of no relevance as I tried both) to the docking station that is in turn connected to laptop or other device (I've tested several docking stations with same result), I get pretty much inaudible sound.

I've also tested by connecting S2721DGF via HDMI directly and also don't get sound from my speakers this way. PC connected over DIsplayPort works always perfectly though!

Rarely it actually starts working normally by itself and I have no idea what influences that.

I'm not sure what's exactly the problem here as I tried changing cables, changing docking station and devices, which led me to believe it's monitor-related.

To be clear, the speakers are connecting to #6 Audio line-out port, not #10 Audio headphone port?

Am I correct that PC in this case is a Desktop?

Are the Laptops also running Windows operating system?

Does the Desktop have an HDMI out port to test on the S2721DGF HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 in ports?

Yes, the speakers jack is connected to #6. PC utilizing the DP connection is indeed a desktop running Windows 10. The laptop connected via Hdmi is running windows 10 too. But as noted in original post, I've also tried connecting Xbox to HDMI 1/2 and had no sound.

Weirdly, after testing more I've noticed that whenever I turn on my desktop connected via DP, then the sound on HDMI ports also starts to work. But if I don't do that - I'm having this no audio issue.

I've conducted some more tests and indeed, the audio from line-out port connected to the speakers works for HDMI sources starts to work again only if I turn off the PC that's connected to monitor via DP. I'm not sure what causes this behavior and if that might be a firmware issue on the line-out side for multiple sources (DP and HDMI connected simultaneously).

Good day to all.

I had my S2721DGF for a few years by now and didn't notice an audio issue until I started to use it for several devices.

My speakers are connected to #6 S2721DGF Audio line-out port (manual, page 11).

My desktop PC is connected to #5 S2721DGF DisplayPort.

My other devices (I've tried laptop, Xbox Series S directly and Steam Deck via official docking station) via HDMI (tried ports HDMI 1 and HDMI 2) to the S2721DGF.

The problem is that when I use my desktop PC connected over DisplayPort, my audio works just fine (S2721DGF is selected), but any device connected via HDMI has no audio (none of the mentioned above worked properly) or there's a very faint sound (monitor volume setting is set to 100).

Another peculiarity is that if I turn on my desktop first, then switch to the device connected over HDMI - the audio sometimes starts working on for that device.

I'm quite lost and wonder if it's a defective S2721DGF?

S2721DGF rear label showing the private Service Tag number and 20 digit serial number
S2721DGF Dell order invoice showing the order date, your information, etc.

* Turn the S2721DGF off
* Disconnect EVERY cable from the S2721DGF = Power, HDMI, DP, USB
* Disconnect the external speakers and all USB devices from the S2721DGF
* Press the S2721DGF power button for 8 seconds
* Reconnect the power cable and external speakers to the S2721DGF
* Connect a single HDMI to HDMI cable from the S2721DGF HDMI 1 to the Xbox Series S HDMI out port
* Turn the Xbox Series S on, then the S2721DGF
* Test audio
