screen goes black when mouse touched

We have a logitech cordless mouse, installed a few months ago.  Last few weeks, after starting the computer, we have a normal appearing desktop with icons.  But if we then touch the mouse to do something, the screen goes black.  This also happens at times after the computer has been on for awhile.  We have windows xp.  I checked the logitech website and drivers are already up to date.  I changed the Power settings for the monitor to Never for all categories and restarted, but no difference.  Thanks for any advice.
