self-test feature check when computer "off"

when the computer is off, or when the screen saver/power setting turns the monitor off, instead of the monitor going dead, it gives me the "self test feature check" colour bars. I'm pretty sure it didn't use to do this, and its not a good power saver as the monitor is clearly not "off" any idea what I did to change the settings?

I may have solved the problem, so I'm posting the solution for other readers yesterday the monitor lost signal completely, and when I re-seated the connector on t the back of the PC this problem went away too. conceivably, it is possible for most of the connector to remain intact, and lose the part where the PC send "on and off" signals to the display. seems to have been the problem anyway, so next time you hear the answer might be, "try re-seating the connector" Daryn
