U2312HM, USB connection not working
After I use the USB cable that came with the monitor to connect between the monitor and a Dell laptop based on the "setting up your monitor", the monitor is dark. The laptop has an HDMI port, but not a DisplayPort which the monitor accepts. Why the USB connection isn't working?

The USB cable does not provide a video signal. It only turns the four USB downstream ports on.
You have to use the U2312M video in ports (DisplayPort/DVI/VGA) to receive a video signal from the PC.
In your case =
Laptop HDMI out port --> HDMI to DVI cable --> U2312HM DVI in port

Laptop HDMI out port --> HDMI to VGA cable --> U2312HM VGA in port
