U2415, Blinking and then blank

We purchased new from Dell on Dec.19, 2015. We hooked it up on December 25th. The first problem message said, no DP cable connected. Finally we changed it to DP and all seems well. But then it started blinking and blinking and then went blank.

What computer model? What video out ports are available on the computer? If a desktop, is there an added discrete video card? If yes, what ports are on the video card?

Hello,

I will attempt to answer your questions.  Computer model:  XPS 8900 with intel core I5 64 Bit running windows 10.

I do not think there is a discrete video card, on the box it says NIVIDa GeForce GT 730 2 GB DDR3  but when I looked at computers system, it says the computer has the Intel HD Graphics 530 DAC type Internal,  location PCI bus 0 device 2 function 0.

Again looking at software download onto the computer, it has NVIDIA graphic driver, 3D Vision Photo viewer and 3DVision preview pack 1  but all are listed as  unavailable.

Computer  has a media card reader.

I did download from dell a new BIOS XPS 8900 – 2.0.3.exe.  Since then the monitor has blinked and gone out 2 times(once today and once 2 days ago).  It came back on hours later when I pushed the on button (which appeared to already be on).

I would appreciate your opinion and other suggestions.

Thank you for you response.

The Nvidia GeForce GT 730 is an add in discrete video card. When looking at the bottom rear of the XPS 8900, you should see it as 10,11,12 in the picture.

That is where the U2415 should be connected.

The Nvidia GT 730 has the following video out ports =
DVI-D/HDMI/VGA

The U2514 has the following video in ports =
HDMI/HDMI/DP/mDP

So you should be connecting like this =
XPS 8900 Nvidia GT 730 HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> U2415 HDMI in

Do I disconnect the mDP cord I have connected from monitor to #6 onboard display port on the computer?

Check something for me. Leave the monitor connected to #6...
* Restart and press F2
* Go to Video
What is currently chosen?

I did what you asked and under video there is,multi display  which says enabled.  Under primary display. It has 3 choices AUTO, INTEL HD graphics and NIVIDIA HD graphics. AUTO is selected.

I don't think the monitor likes being connected in both places. When I restarted the computer, the screen went blank. Pushing on and off button brought it back on!

There are three options for video on XPS 8900, all based on what you choose in the Bios- Display;

* Set it to Multi Display Disabled, Primary Display Intel HD Graphics
- Remove the added PCIe x16 video card from the system
- Use either the onboard HDMI out or onboard DisplayPort out

* Set it to Multi Display Disabled, Primary Display Nvidia HD Graphics
- Use the added PCIe x16 video card as your only Graphics
- The onboard HDMI out and onboard DisplayPort out are turned OFF

* Set it to Multi Display Enabled, Primary Display AUTO
- The onboard HDMI out is Primary
- The onboard DisplayPort out is Secondary
- The added PCIe x16 video card ports are Tertiary, Quaternary, Quinary

Thank you for your suggestions.  I believe I will set it for option 3.  However, will this fix the monitor???

Possibly. Having only one video card cable connected to the monitor may help.

I am getting the same thing on a 2012 macpro. I thought it might be an aging ATI radeon 5770 card so I purchased a new EVGO GTX 980 NVIDIA card with 4GB. I use the Display ports and still the Dell monitors blink and blank. Do these U2415s have a bad chip set or something ?? Maybe they don't keep connection active?? I thought maybe it was software related and have started fresh with a new boot drive installing the system clean, still I get the problems. I have only recently relized it can be the monitor and not my system because restarting the monitor seems to work for a little while.

I have the same issue with my macbook pro 15 inch retina 2014 model, connected to a brand new Dell U2415 monitor. Connected using Display port. It seemed to work a little while but after that starts blinking and blanking and then goes into a complete blank. Yes restarting the monitor appears to work for a little while, so this issue seems a major defect in the U2415 series monitor, and Dell should have a fix, as replacing monitors don't seem to work.

The only other way is a full refund of the cost of monitor during the warranty period.
