U2715H, USB downstream port usage, #2

Referring to this 2017 thread. Thanks for the answer but this is stupid. Monitor USB ports barely help if you need to have a cable from your mac to the monitor in the first place.

DP and HDMI have never transmitted USB communication from the monitor to the PC? From where did you get that idea?

If you want a single cable setup, we do provide newer monitors with USB Type-C port. The U2721DE has four USB downstream ports which work using the single USB Type-C to C cable. See page 9 in the online U2721DE User's Guide =

^ Was just coming here to write what Chris-M said.

@zjxhz  If you'll only be plugging a single USB device into the display, then I agree that having to run a USB cable from your display to your system doesn't get you anything.  But most people plug multiple USB devices into the display -- the U2715H has four USB ports built into it -- and in that case the display works just like a regular USB hub, where you plug multiple USB peripherals into the hub and then have a single USB cable from the hub to the system.  Not sure why you would have expected you could completely avoid using a USB cable to get USB peripherals working with your system.  Were you surprised you needed to connect a video cable to get video to the display too?

DisplayPort and HDMI have never carried USB data.  USB-C is capable of carrying video and USB data, and power, all over a single cable.  If that's what you want, then get a display with a USB-C input and a system that has a USB-C port that supports video output and system charging from it -- both of which are optional features of USB-C ports and therefore not implemented on all systems that have such ports.

I don't understand people who call things stupid when it's their own ignorance of relevant information that led to their unreasonable expectations of how things would work.
