U2717D, no connection with DP

Hello,

I am using the monitor U2717D for years with HDMI and it works fine. For some reason I now wanted to connect the PC with DisplayPort and it is not working! I have tried several cables (DP to MiniDP, 2x DP to HDMI) and none of them works. I have also tried several Laptops or desktop PCs and none of them works. This leads to the assumption that something has to be wrong with the monitor. I have read some articles about DP1.2 issues and tried to follow all advises. Unfortunately none of them worked. I am quite desperate now and want to ask you for an advise and whether there are fundamental issues with using DisplayPort on this device.

Waiting for your feedback,

Pat

@chillyp8  I’ve been using a pair of U2717D displays on a daisy chain for a while now, with the source system being connected to the first display using either a MiniDP to DP cable or a USB-C to DP cable. That setup has worked flawlessly with 5 laptops I’ve used.

However, an HDMI to DP cable can only be used to connect a DisplayPort source to an HDMI display. It cannot be used in the other direction as it sounds like you’re attempting. So that definitely won’t work, and it isn’t the display’s fault. Not sure why the MiniDP to DP cable scenario isn’t working though. What system are you using when using that cable? Maybe just try another cable in case there’s a problem with that specific cable, since right now that’s the only cable you tried that would’ve been EXPECTED to work.

@chillyp8  One additional note to follow up on my earlier reply. For any follow-up on your end, it would be helpful to identify your exact test scenarios, meaning the specific system/GPU you’re testing with, which end of which cable is connected to it, and whether you’re using the DP, MiniDP, or HDMI input on the display. Right now since you’re using MiniDP to DO cables and DP to HDMI cables, and the U2717D has all 3 of those input types, it’s completely ambiguous which way you’re using these cables.

Also, check Windows Display Settings to see whether the display is being detected even if the system isn’t sending an image to it, or if the display isn’t even being registered at all.

Just saying “It’s not working” doesn’t give people who are willing to help you anything to work with. The more specific you can be in terms of what you’re doing and what exact results you’re seeing or not seeing, the more likely you’ll be able to get helpful responses.

And just to make sure, you are remembering to change the input selection on the display when you switch cable connections, right? Sorry if that sounds trite, but that actually did turn out to be the underlying cause of an issue I helped someone with here once. I went through a lot of troubleshooting before thinking to ask if the user was actually changing input selections.

@chillyp8  Actually one last question, since this ALSO turned out to be the underlying cause of the problem in another case I helped with here. The U2717D also has a DisplayPort output that is meant to be used to connect to the input of another display in order to create a display daisy chain. So make sure you are NOT connecting to that. You would need to connect your system to the U2717D DisplayPort input

@jphughanThanks a lot for your detailled answers to my problem! You got me with your first guess. I was not aware, that the DP to HDMI cables only work in one direction. So this is most likely the issue. Unfortunately I have no DP or mDP output connector at my notebooks or desktop PC. There is only HDMI or Thunderbolt 2 or 3. (In my question I wrote that I have used a DP to mDP cable. That was not correct. It was a HDMI to mDP.)

Now I just have the problem that I can't connect 2 notebooks via HDMI to switch them when needed via the displays input source setup. The display only has 1x HDMI, 2x DP, 1x mDP.

I have the following PC's:

  • MacBook Pro 15" Retina (MGXA2D/A) with HDMI and Thunderbolt2 output
  • HP ZBook Studio G3 with HDMI and USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 output
  • Desktop PC with HDMI, VGA and HDMI output

I need to figure out for myselves now, how to connect all of them to the monitor at the same time. Therefor I think I need new cables: 1x Thunderbolt 2 to DP (MacBook) and 1x Thunderbolt 3 to mDP (Zbook). The desktop PC will remain with the HDMI cable.

@chillyp8  Glad I was able to help.  Your plan will work, but instead of looking for TB2 to DP and TB3 to mDP, you will probably find it easier to find a TB2 to mDP cable and a TB3 to DP cable.  Additionally, they wouldn't actually be TB2 or TB3 cables, since these cables wouldn't be tapping into Thunderbolt, so if you search for "Thunderbolt" cables, you'll limit your options.  You just need mDP to mDP (easier) or mDP to DP (still pretty easy) and then either USB-C to DP (easier) or USB-C to mDP (not quite as common).
