U3223QE, can't access downstream USB devices

I'm having an odd issue with my U3223QE, which I also had with my U3219Q - the monitor works great, and powers my laptop, but I can't access any of the downstream USB ports from my laptop, including the Dell speaker (AC511).  There are two things that make this odd -
1) I didn't have any issues the first year or two I owned my laptop (Lenovo X1 Carbon, 6th Generation)
2) my wife's MacBook can use the downstream ports, including the speaker, with no issues whatsoever.  When I unplug her computer from the USB-C cable, the lights on the speaker go out, and when I plug my computer in, the lights never come on.

I've scoured various online forums, and can't seem to find anything directly on-point, but I'm wondering if it's a cable issue from some posts I read recently.  Then again, I'm not sure how the cable would work with one computer but not another.  Also, I had the same computer when everything worked well, and I don't think I changed any of the cables (but maybe I did, it's been a minute).

Specific information:

  • Lenovo X1 Carbon, 6th Generation
  • Intel Core i7-10710U CPU
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Dell U3223QE monitor
  • Dell AC511 speaker
  • USB-C cable between laptop and monitor (using the 90W powered port)
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Intel UHD Graphics Card

The fact that the both monitors and both 1M/3.2ft USB-C to USB-C cables work with the MacBook to see the USB-A downstream ports means our hardware is functional.

Something changed in the Lenovo X1 Carbon from when it was working to not working. Most likely a drivers change which caused thew issue.

In addition to the U3223QE USB-C to USB-C cable, also connect the U3223QE  USB-C to USB-A cable from the U3223QE #8 USB-C upstream port to a USB-A port on the Lenovo X1 Carbon. Then retest.

Just to ensure I understand, I should take a USB-C to USB-A cable, plug the USB-C portion into the #8 port on the monitor, and plug the USB-A portion into my laptop?  And should that be the only connection between the two, or should I leave the USB-C to USB-C connection as well, such that there are two cables between the monitor and the laptop?

I have similar issues but with connecting 2 of U3223QE monitors to a laptop. I can get 1st monitor to work but not the 2nd monitor using down stream connection. I try connecting 2nd monitor using DP-DP cable, 2nd monitor works but the resolution reduces from 3840 x 2160 to 2560 x 1440.

I don't know the proper ways to use down stream connection so that the 2nd monitor still gives 4K.

I found this article but it gets complicate for the end users, is there a better way than playing around with the registry?

Thanks,
