U3415W, Display Manager for OS X?

Hi !

just bought a wonderful Dell U3415W. I love it ! I have realized there is no "Manager Display" for OS X. Wonder if Dell is going to release it and when. It's a shame not to have such application for Mac users.

Thanks !

As you can see in the image below taken directly from the Dell monitor driver page. Apple OS are not supported by Dell on this monitor model. So no, we never had Entech write an Apple specific DDM.

I , I was answering Giovanni other post about the 2 screens , based on my experience. Do I have to read your post as : this monitor is not / will not be recomended to be used with a Mac ? I had a few problems in connecting it to my Macpro 2013 , quite ok with HDMI but not working with your supplied cable mini display port-display port.

I just ordered a cable minidisplay port-mini display port 1.2 to see if I can use one of the thunderbolt/mini DP of my Mac and get full resolution at 60 Hz.

The other issue is that I only see two possible resolutions.

What else I need to know ?? I like your screen very much , at home I have 100% MAc, in the office 100% Dell , do I have to return the screen to Amaziìon , if I risk to be unhappy anout it with Mac in the near future ??

many thanks

Your call. Unfortunately, Dell does not test/validate this monitor model on Apple hardware, ports, and software. Because of this, Dell does not have many troubleshooting steps to offer. You could post on the Apple Discussions Forum and see what they say.

Hi Giovani

I have got my Mac Mini to display the full 3440x1440 resolution on the U3415W by connecting the mDP end to the Thunderbolt port and the DP end to the DP in port. I did however need to turn DP 1.2 off in the onscreen settings. I have a PC connected using the mDP port of the monitor and can switch between them using the onscreen menu.

With DP 1.2 set off it is not possible to Daisy Chain another monitor. I also setup picture-in-picture with the output from the Thunderbolt Port as the main display and then had the HDMI output also from the same Mac Mini in the PIP window. I had mirrored display set off and so I had the weird display of two desktops from the same Mac Mini ;-)

I hope this gives you some helpful information.

Hi Nigel, very useful !!

I turned DP 1.2 off and it s now working with both DP to mDP and also with a mDP to mDP cable I did buy meanwhile. So now I can connect the Mac Pro to the U3415w with Hdmi (50hz) and to the DP or the mDP ports. (60hz).

The next problem I have now, is that I can only use 3440x1440 and 2560x 1280 or somethng similar. Wen I try to use PBP, both left and right screen has those standard resolutions , and of course I can't use them on a smaller screen. Did you find any way to configure say a 1720x1440 or something similar ? Thanks , giovanni

Hi Giovanni,

The only way that I could get picture in picture with my PC via mDP (main display) and Mac via HDMI (PIP).

Changing the resolution to make the PIP more useable and have a better aspect ratio is managed on the Mac using the Settings | Displays | and then choose scaled for your U3415W. I found 1344x756 (60MHz)was about right for me. I'm trying to work out how I can connect the Mac Mini using the USB Up port to allow control of both displays with a single keyboard and mouse.

Hi Nigel,

On the MacPro I only have available

3440x1440       2560x1080     2048x858      1600x670

all above formats are 21:9 , and the 1600x670 fits quite well with the PIP.

I have a different target, to use PBP at full screen , using 2 different ports from the Mac Pro . Doing this ( say connecting both  MDP and the Hdmi) I can split the monitor in 2 squared displays, so I would need for each of them something like 1720x1440 or 1280x1080 , to maintain a proportion between x and y axis.

Dell wrote in this forum that this monitor is not optimised for Mac, so my only hope is Apple in the future to add in OS X drivers for the type of monitors to have a wider choice of scaling !

ciao

Via the Mac Mini/ThunderBolt Port to the DP monitor port the resolutions I have offered are:

3440x1440, 2560x1080, 2048x858, 1920x804, 1720x720, 1600x670 60Hz/50Hz

Via HDMI I have:

3440x1440 (30Hz)

1600x900, 1344x756, 1080p, 1080i, 720p (60Hz)

I don't think you are going to end up with the display options you want ie aspect ration 1.2:1 unless you get the option to set customisable display sizes in the Display Manager as this is not available on my Mac or PCs

Cheers,

Nigel

for those using this on a mac, if I remember correctly from reading a post on another forum. You just need to set the DP to 1.1

Im a mac user too and about to throw some money at this money soon.

Hi dvmblues,

As I said in my earlier post on 6th February:

"I have got my Mac Mini to display the full 3440x1440 resolution on the U3415W by connecting the mDP end to the Thunderbolt port and the DP end to the DP in port. I did however need to turn DP 1.2 off in the onscreen settings. I have a PC connected using the mDP port of the monitor and can switch between them using the onscreen menu." The miniDP port and Thunderbolt port connections are directly compatible.

Unless someone has already done this and posts to say so then you will be taking a risk. It seems likely that this will work as it has for me but Dell have specifically stated that the monitor has no support for Macs.

I have  a 2012 mac mini. What are your thoughts on using this monitor with that system? It has i7 quad with 16 gb ram, Thoughts?

December 10th, 2015 17:00

I have the Mac Mini i5 2011 with 16GB RAM and it seems to work fine with this. I would expect you to have no problems. Please bear in mind that Dell does not offer support for the U1534W monitor with Apple devices.

Hi nigelfreeney, can you confirm whether your mini has the dedicated Radeon graphics or integrated HD3000. I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether the HD3000 graphics has enough grunt to push this resolution.

Hi gje360,

I have dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1MB Details:
