U3419W, unstable USB Type-C connection

Hello!

I bought U3419W monitor. USB Type-C connectivity was the main requirement when I was searching for a new monitor, but I'm having issues with it. I connect my laptop to monitor using USB Type-C connection. Most of the time everything works as expected, but every day at least 2 times a day I get random disconnects - monitor goes blank, laptop loses all signals (video, USB data, PD) from the monitor and then after few seconds connection gets restored. This is very annoying... it interferes with my work, messes up alignment of all open application windows and stops charging the laptop. When I connect laptop's original charger together with USB Type-C, then connection remains stable, so I assume the issue is related to PD.

I'm using HP ZBook Studio G5 laptop (NVIDIA Quadro P1000 inside) which is connected to Dell U3419W via single USB Type-C cable. Laptop is running Windows 10 with all latest updates and drivers installed.

What I've tried so far:
* Different video card drivers for my laptop.
* Hard reset, factory reset, self tests, diagnostics.
* Bought brand new Thunderbolt 3 cable with USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), DP and PD 100W support.

I was thinking about updating monitor firmware (currently M3B107), but newer versions can be found only in other discussions in this forum and are not listed in official monitor driver page. So I did not risk it without recommendation from Dell support.

I'd appreciate any suggestions to resolve this issue.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue with a  similar setup (U3419W monitor + HP ZBook Studio G4 laptop + USB Type-C). This is very annoying. Would appreciate any suggestion to solve this issue.

Thanks!

Hi @RNEithac,

I'm sorry to hear that, though at least more people complain about this issue and maybe this will get more attention.

I had a chat with Dell support for almost whole day, unfortunately I did not receive any usable suggestions or information. Support blames HP and told me to plug in the charger.

I found another thread where author has the same issue: https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U2720Q-USB-Type-C-disconnect-reconnect/m-p/7631720

And he's using Lenovo with Windows 10, so doesn't look like HP's fault.

Hi @Izolators,

Interesting. Hope it helps if more people have this issue.

I'm also in contact with Dell support, but they require a video of the problem, which is not so easy, given the randomness of the issue.

I actually also see the same issue with: U3419W monitor + HP Elite desk + with display port. So not USB-C specific either it seems.

Regarding USB-C and my z-book, I always have the charger connected and still see this issue.

@RNEithac

Try to put your laptop under stress - in parallel open multiple 4K videos, run some benchmark tools and some other resource hungry applications or processes. In my case I don't need to wait long until USB-C connection crashes.

You can also send the same videos as posted in https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U2720Q-USB-Type-C-disconnect-reconnect/m-p/7631720 (video 1 and 2) because I assume you're seeing the same issue and I'm not sure what Dell support expects to see different in your video.
