U3818DW, KVM working for MacBook Pro, not Dell Precision?

I'm using this monitor with my 16" 2019 Macbook Pro, and a Dell Precision 5540 laptop.  When I'm viewing my MacBook Pro it recognizes the mouse and keyboard that I have plugged into the monitor.  But when I switch to the Dell laptop, it won't recognize either, so I have no way to control it without opening it up and using the touchpad and keyboard.  That's not a usable option for me, so hoping there's a way to fix that. I would think connecting the Dell monitor to a Dell laptop would be fairly straightforward?

I'm connected to the Macbook Pro using the USB Type-C cable.  I'm connected to the Dell laptop using the HDMI cable.  That appears to be the only option for that one.

Thanks!

THANK YOU!!!  It wasn't clear to me that I needed to use a seperate USB upstream cable.  I connected that up and all is working perfectly.  So thank you very much.
