U3821DW, video through #8 USB-B upstream?
Hi all,
I have been using the USB C connection so far to dock and get video from my laptop to monitor but when I connect an older laptop that only has the older USB style connection I get the mouse and keyboard and webcam but the screen can’t output from laptop to monitor. Should I be able to use this port (port 10 on the image) to receive from the laptop? On a typical dock it works so not sure why this isn’t. I’ve tried all 3 USB ports on the laptop and all behave the same.

The laptop has to have at least one video out port on it? Are you sure that it does not?
Possible connection setups. See page 11 in the online U3821DW User's Guide for the numbers below =
Laptop HDMI out --> U3821DW HDMI to HDMI cable --> U3821DW #3 HDMI in
Laptop USB-A --> U3821DW USB-A to USB-B upstream cable --> U3821DW #8 USB-B upstream port
Laptop DP out --> U3821DW DP to DP cable --> U3821DW #5 DP in
Laptop USB-A --> U3821DW USB-A to USB-B upstream cable --> U3821DW #8 USB-B upstream port

Hi there
Thanks for the reply. I see, so it looks like the hub doesn’t accept / support sending video over the super speed USB Type B port cable. I just assumed it would as I have an external USB type B style external dock where you plug the monitor cables (hdmi or d-port, etc) into the hub and then from the hub you use only USB type B to USB type A cable and that send all the USB and video over the one cable.
I assumed this would do the same but if I’m reading it right, it doesn’t and you need the Type-B port for the USB function and the video ports (hdmi, d-port, etc) for video? Which I find weird as USB-C does the whole lot. What am I missing here? Doesn’t seem quite right that it doesn’t receive video into the monitor from the laptop as given the hub is built in, why would it need the hdmi or other video cable?
Essentially, my old setup using USB B was like this…..
1. Monitor plugs HDMI or D-Port into hub.
2. USB peripherals plugged into hub.
3. Ethernet into hub.
4. Hub plugs from USB-B into laptop on USB-A.
All usb and video functions are sent over the one cable. The USB C on the monitor works this way, the USB B should do the same shouldnt it? My old hub is about 9 years old.
Thanks.

By the way, the laptop does have the hdmi out…. I’m just wondering why I have to use it because like I said in previous reply, if you have USB-C you don’t need the video cable and with my old dock, the dock didn’t need the video cable from laptop, just from monitor. Given the monitor is the dock, this doesn’t make sense in my head that it should need the video cable for USB-B but not for USB-C.
thanks again.

That picture you posted above does not look like our U3821DW?
* The U3821DW video in ports are = #3 HDMI, #5 DP, #6 USB-C (Video + Data)
* The U3821DW #8 USB-B upstream is data only
* The U3821DW #9 USB-A, #11 USB-A, #12 USB-C downstream are data only

Yep. You are right. Wrong picture. Ignore my picture. Everything I speak about refers to port 8 in your picture. Sorry about the mix up.
