U4919DW, Apple, USB downstream ports

I'm having difficulty getting my MacBook Pro to consistently read USB drives when I plug them into my newly purchased Dell U4919DW monitor ports. The screenshots below demonstrate what is happening. The USB drive is not visible in the "Locations" in Finder. It is visible in the Disk Utility, however it shows up as greyed out and when I click on it, it never allows me to see the details. So something is being recognized, but I don't understand what is happening.

The Mac is connected to the monitor via one USB-C cable. The external drives are connected to the USB ports on the monitor. I have one older USB drive that is recognized every time. Peripheral devices are recognized and operational. Three of my newer USB drives are the ones not being recognized. Any advice or help is appreciated.

I am unable to choose the full resolution of the U4919DW on my 2016 MacBook Pro. The resolution is automatically scaled down to 3840x1080. It should display the full 5120x1440. I'm using the included Dell USB-C cable.

For my notes, click my username and via private message send me the U4919DW service tag number.

The usage of the U4919DW and the Apple proprietary hardware and operating system are out of scope. For Dell to troubleshoot, you must test the U4919DW on a dedicated Windows operating system PC to see if the issues are present.

You can see on the U4919DW drivers page and also in the U4919DW User's Guide that the Apple proprietary hardware and operating system were never tested/validated by Dell.

You should post the issue on the Apple Forum and see what other Apple users have done as far as Apple PC troubleshooting and possible Apple proprietary cabling to purchase. None of the SLN articles referenced by the other Apple user mention the Apple OS.

It's odd that the list of drives shows it as 2TB whereas the detailed view shows it as 1TB. I wonder if that's part of the issue. Have you tried connecting the drive directly to the MacBook USB-C through an adapter that converts it to the older USB format?

The 1TB screen you see is the internal drive on the Mac. When I click on the 2TB external drive, it freezes and won't display the 2TB screen. Yes, when I connect the drive to the Mac directly (through a USB-C to USB-A converter), it works as normal.
