VGA TO DVI

I have a 19" dell monitor with a VGA plug (blue).  I was wondering, if I upgrade my video card that only has a DVI output, can I get a new cord for my monitor or is ther an adapter that can make my monitor plug into a DVI?

Thanks

P.S.  My monitor is an E196FP

Most newer video cards have both the blue analog connector and the white dvi connector, so you won't need an adaptor.  A few cards have two dvi connectors and a few have one dvi connector.  So, why don't you just stick with a card that has both ?  What video card are you thinking of and what is your computer model number ?

He's asking if he can make his monitor support DVI if it's natively a VGA display. The answer is no because DVI connections are capable of both VGA and DVI, thus even if you get an adapter the signal will really be sent as VGA and not DVI.

Only a monitor capable of decoding the DVI signal can make use of this, as far as I'm aware there isn't a converter available that can change this.

I said :  " Most newer video cards have both the blue analog connector and the white dvi connector, so you won't need an adaptor "  He was asking about an adaptor.......

That is true sam, and I was not meaning to confuse this, but did.  He should still get a video card with both analog and dvi, so when he finally gets another monitor that supports dvi, he can connect to it or connect the analog if he chooses.  Some like analog, being that for some, it does not show much of a difference ( Probably because of their eye sight being poor ) over dvi.  I prefer digital over analog.
