What sound bar is good for the U2412M?

What are my sound bars choices for the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24.0 inch monitor?

What would you recommend?

I would just use and older monitor speaker with no power supply. I don't think the new one comes with the power bar.

Funny how I went through 4 chat sessions and none of the 4 knew the above but all tried to direct me to dead end links. I used my old speaker on my new 24" monitor. Hint; never mention old parts to the chatters either. Big waste of time and it worked after all, thanks to this forum I discovered it woud a day before the U2412m arrived.

when i read the dell soundbar documentation, it takes a supply from existing monitor's supply, which is 12v dc female jacks. the audio is taken from pc's soundcard with limegreen 3.5mm jack. really?!?!

my suggestion, this accessories should take an input from existing audio carries by either hdmi or DisplayPort. why have hdmi/dp connection to a monitor when you have a speaker plug to a monitor that still take a source from soundcard and not hdmi/dp?

Probably new accesories will have this option, but also retain the limegreen jack for compatibility with existing systems. I think AX510 precedes HDMI.

Razvan_N: if you look at the AX510 picture and read the documentation, you can see its input is from pc soundcard via limegreen 3.5mm jack and not from a monitors although it has hdmi/dp connection :emotion-4:
what a waste.

Azuan: I'm not sure what you mean in your last post. My AX510 instructions (in PDF format) make no mention and show no HDMI port in the drawings. AX510 can also be mounted on monitors with only VGA and DVI connectors.

Anyway, HDMI and DisplayPort carry DIGITAL audio, so a conversion would be needed, either in the monitor or AX510, which would complicate matters and increase prices. I'm very happy with mine as it is.

I use an AX510 with my U2711 monitor which is connected via DP cable to my PC.

The DP cable carries video and audio. The monitor provides power and audio outputs which the sound bar connects to using a short black power lead and a long green 3.5mm audio plug.

One minor complaint is the AX510, meant to connect to the monitor, has a L O N G green 3.5mm audio input cable is annoying. I would have preferred both power AND audio cables to be short as i only require them to reach the monitor outputs. My only other complaint is with the U2711 itself which when going to sleep mode causes a crackle sound on the speaker bar!

Sound is surprisingly good at low volumes but as i don't use it to watch movies, my sound quality needs aren't super high.

AX510 was not MEANT to connect to the monitor: it was meant to connect to an analogue audio source. (Even power-wise, it could be connected to an external supply.) In your case, the audio source is in the high-end monitor. In many other cases, possibly the great majority, it's in the computer. You can always make a long cable short (small cable ties, for example), but not viceversa (extensions introduce losses and noise).

Razvan_N, i know hdmi/dp carries digital signal, both video and audio. i am giving a suggestion, so in the future dell will make a digital speaker so that audio input can be taken via hdmi/dp rather than using analog limegreen port from soundcard. like skylarking said it has long cable which is quite annoying.

why making accessories/plugged speaker if it still using pc soundcard as a source? they should utilize and manipulate the existing audio via hdmi/dp :emotion-1:

From the AX510 setup guide:

1. Unpack and verify contents of the box.
2. Attach speaker to monitor, snap into place.
3. Connect speakers to computer.
4. Connect speakers to power adapter or Dell monitor's soundbar connector.
5. Turn volume knob cloakwise to turn on speaker.
6. When using headphones, connect to any speaker jack.

Now point 2. does not show a direct analogue connection can be made to a monitor but one does have to acknowledge that these setup guides are rather simplistic and are designed to get a very basic user working with their newly acquired purchase. Oddly, if i use your logic, according to the U2711 setup guide, i can't even use a DP connection on my U2711 as the setup guide only indicated VGA or DVI cable can be used.

Such setup guides are not meant to define all connectivity options, configurations or use with non Dell equipment (and in usual Dell style, more detailed documentation may be scant - but hey, in this case it's just a speaker bar so that's OK). But to say that the AX510 is not MEANT to be connected to the U2711 is just WRONG. After all, i am connecting to an analogue audio output provided by monitor :emotion-1:.

Annoyances about analogue cable length and noise when monitor goes into power save mode are that, annoyances. They either annoy you or the don't.

Hey guys,

it's been a while, but I am wondering if anyone has a direct comparison regarding the sound quality of the AX510 and AY511

As the latter comes with an external power supply, I wonder if it has more sound power that you really notice.

If not, I'd avoid another fat plug for sure and go with the AX510 that is powered by the screen itself.

Also - are there any sound specs out for both?

thx!

FYI . . . I ordered the AY511 on the 28th of October . . . and was not informed untiil the 14th of November that it is no longer available . . . and I was offered NO option for a replacement for use with the U2412M Monitor that has not yet been delivered (ordered the same date) . . .

well, then the AY511 obviously wasn't that great...

hi, may i ask you where u purchase the AY511 from? are you located in the USA?

i was looking at the AX510, but found that the AY511 is bigger and more powerful. so i would rather order the AY511.

but the issues you've ran into also concerns me.
