Hey Pratik,

I think we are missing some information:

1.- What entry do you create in hosts file, and which hosts file are you talking about? (Exchange server or NetWorker server)

2.- How many IP's/NIC's does the Exchange server have?

3.- Is this stand-alone or DAG?

4.- Do you use DNS? If so then there is no need to edit hosts file.

5.- Are you able to resolve names correctly from NW server to Exchange without entries in hosts files?

6.- What is the policy you are talking about?

Please provide us with some more information about configuration and error messages.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Here are the details for your queries:

1.- What entry do you create in hosts file, and which hosts file are you talking about? (Exchange server or NetWorker server)

--> I am making client hostname in the client host file (AD servers)

2.- How many IP's/NIC's does the Exchange server have?

--> Two NIC/IP's per mailbox server

3.- Is this stand-alone or DAG?

--> Exchange servers are in DAG

4.- Do you use DNS? If so then there is no need to edit hosts file.

--> Yes, i use DNS to resolve server entries.

5.- Are you able to resolve names correctly from NW server to Exchange without entries in hosts files?

--> Yes, i am able to resolve.

6.- What is the policy you are talking about?

--> The policy that i am talking about is Exchange Group Policy.

Regards,

Pratik.

Hi Carlos,

We don't get any error message but the Exchange Group Policy does not get applied and hence the Exchange team is not able to carry out their activities.

Pratik.

Pratik,

Here is what you posted:

"When I take out that entry from the client's host file, the backup gets failed."

That is the error I'm talking about. If no entries in hosts file backup fails, right? so what is the error message of the failed backup?

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Pratik,

Not sure yet why you need to play around with the hosts file if you are using DNS for name resolution.

Anyway I would say you should check the DNS and AD configurations.

What is the error message you get if you don't add any entry in the hosts files?

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Sorry for the delayed response. The error message is as follows:

39078:save: Client xxx.xx.xx is not properly configured on the networker server.

Pratik.

Hi Pratik,

Have you added that name "xxx.xx.xx" into the Alias field of the client entry in NetWorker server (NMC)?

This alias is the client configuration, is not the host file.

Thank you.

Hi Carlos,

I had added only the hostname of the client and not the FQDN. Now i did the FQDN entry as well and the backup started. Also, i have selected two savesets for backup:

1) VSS SYSTEM BOOT

2) VSS SYSTEM FILESET.

However, during backup the VSS SYSTEM BOOT backup is happening successfully but the other saveset is happening more than one time. If i select that volume and check the save sets, the saveset is showing as aborted, suspect.

What might be the reason for this ?

Regards,

Pratik.

Hi Pratik,
My first question would be, is this an EFI system? Also bear in mind that VSS SYSTEM BOOT will backup more than one writer, so that is the reason why you can see the same saveset running more than once, this also depends on the OS (Windows 2003 or 2008/2008R2).
In the other hand it is recommended to backup all VSS savesets:

VSS SYSTEM BOOT, VSS SYSTEM FILESET, VSS SYSTEM SERVICES,
If you see aborted suspect in any saveset means that backup failed, so what is the output of the backup group completion? What can you see in /nsr/tmp/sg/group_name files? Remember that those files are the output of each of the savesets ran for the clients within that group.

Thank you.
